Vale: Doug Fry

A great friend of St Virgil's.

Doug Fry did not attend St Virgil’s College but became associated with the College through his association with OV’s Bernie Geard and Ian Tynan at Bernie Geard Real Estate when he moved to Hobart from the Mainland.

He became involved with the Old Virgilian Football and Cricket Clubs and became a life member of the Old Virgilians Association.  His three sons, Michael, Simon and Justin attended the College.

From real estate Doug moved into Clerks’ Union. It was from experience in the Clerks Union that motivated him to create a fund that delivered dignity and comfort in retirement and that existed solely to deliver value to members.

Doug was a key player in the establishment of Tasplan. He was a founding director and served as chair of Tasplan (now Spirit Super) for 11 years – its longest serving chairman

During his tenure, the fund grew to more than $1.5 billion from $1.1 million and its membership to 104,000 from 120,000.

Doug was jointly awarded Trustee of the Year by the Australian Institute of Superannuation Trustees in 2009 in recognition of the significant contribution he made to the governance of superannuation.

Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St Joseph’s on April 22.  Doug had had a long association with the Passionist Fathers and had made a significant contribution to the parish.  RIP Doug.
