Prep watching over the school yard

Yesterday, five fabulous Prep students decided that the top of the slide was the best place to watch and cheer on some of our Year 5/6 students while they played cricket at lunchtime. What a great idea!

Discovery with Prep, 1 and 2

This week the Year 2s joined the Preps and Year 1s for Discovery Learning. The new stations were a hit with the students. Below you can see them enjoying many of the stations that connect with our Inquiry units about health and wellbeing.

Prep and Grade 1 Incursion

On Monday the Preps and grade ones participated in an Toolbox incursion about what is inside their bodies. The children really enjoyed finding out about the functions of different body parts and what actions to take to keep their bodies healthy.

Sport with Year 2 and Year 3/4

Over the past couple of the weeks, the Year 2s and some Year 3/4s have been participating in various soccer drills to improve their ball skills.

This week the students were given the opportunity to display the skills they have been practising (kicking, ball control and dribbling) in a soccer match. It was great to see the students' working together with their team to score a goal.

Numeracy with Year 2 and Year 3/4

In Numeracy, the Year 2 and Year 3/4 students learnt a few different card games which encouraged them to problem solve and supported their learning of addition and subtraction. Below the students are playing 'Wild Jack'.

Why not have a go?

Remove all the Kings, Queens and Jokers from your deck of cards.
You and your partner receive five cards each and place them out in front of you.
Place two cards in the middle and add them together. This will become the 'target' number.
Take turns looking at your five cards and try to make the target num ber in any way you can by adding or subtracting.
Once you make the target number, remove those cards and put them to the side in a pile.
Whoever has the most cards in their pile, wins!
Jacks are wild in this game (can be any number of your choosing)! Hence the name, Wild Jack.

Year 5/6

School Camp Recounts

Last Monday all the grade fives and sixes went to Camp Rumbug . It wasn’t what I expected it to be, but it was still really fun even though I missed my family.

At camp my favorite activity was food time . At breakfast the toast was perfect, and at dinner the desserts were exquisite, I loved the food there.

One other thing I loved was the flying fox. At first I was scared because we were ziplining across a lake with supposed “vegan crocodiles”, but once I tried it I didn’t want it to end.

I was sad to go but I enjoyed my stay and to me that was all that matters.

Wow, my legs hurt!

On the 2nd of May 2022 the 5/6s and I went to camp! The bus ride took a pretty long time but luckily I was with my friends. When we got there we learnt a really fun song and to this day it is still stuck in my head. I think it was called the moose alpaca song but I don't really have a clue. Anyway I'm going to tell you a bit about my four favourite activities we did.

Let's start with the giant swing, we all had to work as a team to pull the rope and get the person on the swing all the way to the top. Then when you are up the top you pull a little string and WHOOSH you go flying. I found it really fun and scary at the same time because when I pulled the string to drop down it felt like my heart skipped a beat from how fast I fell. It felt like I was going to fall right on the rocks. then you safely swing side to side with the wind slapping our face. I'm pretty sure everyone's hand were hurting after pulling the rope.

After the giant swing we walked all the way over to the flying fox. It was a whole lot of walking! We went with partners down the flying fox over the huge lake. I kept landing on my butt, but eventually I landed on my feet, twice! The bad thing about this activity was that the only way to get back up and have another go was to walk up a steep hill. It felt like my legs were going to come off. We even learnt that there were two vegan crocodiles in the lake we swung over.

By the end of the day everyone was so tired from how much walking we all did. going up and down, up and down the hills, they were gigantic!!

We then had dinner. We had OK pasta, yummy garlic bread and a delicious chocolate mousse. We went back to our cabins to get ready and Now for my by far favourite activity, it was called passport to world.

We had to get in a group the teachers gave us, then they gave us a flag we needed to find on our own in the dark with our torches. Once you have found the flag you are to answer the questions and run back to see if you got them right. For each one you get wrong you have to do five star jumps, once you have done that you go and get a new flag to find. It was SUPER fun. Later to the end of the activity we have a flag that was really far away in the bushes. So me and my team partnered with a couple other teams to go find it. Everyone was really scared and because of that everyone decided to go back and do another flag. We ended up getting 11 points.

One of the hardest things we had to do was the mud run. It was very fun but quite hard because we needed to jump in mud and go through obstacles to get to the end. We also needed to climb up slippery rocks and paths. When I got out of the mud I was plastered in mud and was a bit numb to my hands from pulling ropes the last two days. Then about one million hills later it was the end. It was safe to say that we ALL had a good night's sleep.

And that was some of my favourite activities at camp rumbug.

My favorite activity was the flying fox because it was fun and scary but the scariest part of it was that I thought I was going to fall in a lake with 2 crocodiles in it. As I kept going it was not that scary because I knew I was not going to fall.

At the campfire we were telling stories, singing songs, and showing off our talents. But my favorite thing at the campfire was roasting the marshmallows. The marshmallows were so sweet and gooey inside they smelled sweet too.

My second favorite activity was the aero ball. It was so fun because we jumped on a trampoline and we tried to score a goal in the opponent's goal and try to win. The timer was 5 minutes and the warm up was 2 minutes. Unfortunately it rained and we didn't get to play that much.

The activity I hated the most was the mud run because you had to go in mud which was a bit deep and I had to walk up a mountain with wet shoes with water in them, wet pants and it felt like we were walking up a mountain with elephants in our bags.

My favourite activity that we did was the Giant Swing because it was scary and fun at the same time, and it was my first time doing it. It felt like I was getting thrown to the other side of the camp but in reality I was just going to swing back and forth, and while that happened I felt like my heart sank every time I swung backwards and forwards.

The next activity was the Flying Fox and that was also kind of scary because it was over a lake and I thought I was going to fall, but it wasn’t as scary as the Giant Swing. The first time I did it, it was really fast but when I started to do it again and again I got less scared and I had more fun, then I did it 4 times.

Then we did the Mud Run where we had to run up and down hills and we also climbed a couple hills where it was really rocky. There was a mud pit that was part of it, but I didn’t go in it because I didn’t want to get dirty. The Mud Run was really tiring and exhausting but in the end I got through it and I got to the end of it.

Another activity we did was called “Passport to the World” where we got in groups and had to find flags of countries around the camp and each flag had 3 questions that were related to that country, if we got it wrong we needed to do 5 star-jumps for each question we got wrong. This activity was at night so it was really hard to navigate the camp even with our maps and torches. Near the end I gave up trying to follow my team around because I wasn’t really contributing to the team and I got really exhausted from running around.

The cabins were small so it got very hot inside and I was in the same cabin as all the other girls so it was pretty loud and hectic. The beds were soft and comfy, but I had a hard time trying to sleep because everyone was talking and it was getting really loud.

The bus ride was 2 hours and 30 minutes and it was so loud I couldn’t sleep at all on the way to the camp and on the way back. The bus ride back to school wasn’t the best because it was even louder and felt longer than the ride to the camp. By the time we got back to Preston everyone got excited and started cheering and shouting. After I got home, I immediately went to shower and then I had food. When I went to bed, I already felt so much better because I had peace and quiet.

My favorite activity was the flying fox because it was fun and scary at the same time. At first I was really scared to do it because I thought something would go wrong and I would fall off. But then when I saw some of my classmates do it I didn't think something would go wrong any more. When I did it I jumped and then felt my heart stop but then it caught me just in time. I ended up doing it three more times.

The mud run was really fun at first because there was an obstacle course but then when the mud came in i didn't really wanna do it but then i saw my friends do it so i did it too. First there was a small puddle but then it started getting deeper, the maximum was up to my hips then after that there was some climbing which was really fun because it was challenging and I had never done it before.

My second favorite activity was Aero ball because it was competitive and fun. At first i was confused because I didn't know how the game worked but then i started playing it and it turned out to be really fun. In the first round me and my teammate got 11 points in total. After a few more rounds we got the hang of it and in round four I scored 27 points and my teammate scored 16 which is 43. We came in second place and I was the top scorer in my group.

On the first day we also did a giant swing. I didn't go on the swing but it was still hard pulling the rope. When everyone had pulled the rope to the maximum the person on the swing was about 20 meters up. The person on the swing had to pull a small string and when they did they started swinging. It was really fun watching my classmates do it, especially the teachers.
