It’s been a busy term! Please have a read below to find out more about some of the exciting things taking place at Jells Park.
We had a successful working bee on Friday 13th May with a great turn out from the parent community! The selected garden beds are now ready for a planting day this coming Saturday 4th June, 10am-2pm. We have a variety of indigenous plants and trees native to the Jells Park area, ready to go. A sausage sizzle and refreshments will also be provided with an opportunity to catch up with other families from the school community. All are welcome to attend and we would love to see you there!
The Level 6 students are currently hosting a school of southern pygmy perch fish. They are residing in the 6S classroom, where the children have been caring for them in the hope that at the end of the term, they can be released into the local creek to grow the population. Tim, the fish expert, has visited to educate the students on the importance of supporting native wildlife and biodiversity. In addition to this exciting project, a selection of Level 6 students are also involved in a four-week program looking at the urban water cycle, pollution problems and health of our local waterways. They have already enjoyed one session and a local excursion down to Jells Park to get some hands-on experience in the field is planned for week 8.
Next week, the Level 4 and 5 students will be attending an excursion to Shepherds Bush community garden. They will be taken on a tour by a ranger from PARKS Victoria who will take them through the life cycle of a tree and show them around the garden. Local volunteers will then work with the students to tube their own indigenous plants which they will then plant back at school.
The Environment Captains have been hard at work in the background planning future initiatives and brainstorming practical ways the student body can have a positive impact on the environment. The rubbish around the school was identified as a major concern and an absolute priority. They have a plan! The leadership team will be telling you more about their idea at the next assembly so stay tuned.
As always, if you have a passion or an area of expertise in the area of sustainability, we would love to hear from you!
