Dear Parents/Carers,

Transition from Year 6 to Secondary School

It is an exciting time of the year as parents and Year 6 students make decisions around secondary school preferences for next year. No doubt many of you will have visited a range of schools to help you decide, and you will have some questions about the process from this point forward.

As you know, your secondary school Placement Application Forms are due by Friday 13 May. From that point, Rowville Primary School will collate the forms and then forward them to your first preference secondary school. State secondary schools will look at all the applications, and their capacity, and will allocate places based on the following criteria:

  1. Neighbourhood school: if the secondary school is your designated neighbourhood school you will automatically receive a place. You can find your designated school by using this link: https://www.findmyschool.vic.gov.au/
  2. Sibling claim: if a sibling who resides at the same address is attending the preferred school in 2023 and there are vacancies, you should be allocated a place.
  3. Distance from the school: if there are vacancies available after steps 1 and 2, offers should be made based on distance from the school.

If a place is not available in your preferred school, your Placement Application Form will be passed onto the school of your second preference. They will follow the same process to fill remaining vacancies. Remember if your preferences cannot accommodate you, your designated local school will have a place for you.

Families will receive an offer of placement on Wednesday 20 July 2022. Once the offers of placement have been made, the secondary schools will begin their enrolment process.

Catholic Schools and Independent Schools have their own processes, enquiries should be referred to the school that you have applied at. Please ensure that you still complete and return your Placement Application Form and highlight that your are opting to send your child to an Independent School, along with the letter of offer from the school.
