Library Volunteers

We have many new books to cover, so if you would like to help in the school library come along and roll up your sleeves, all parents are welcome! Please send an email to office@beaumarissc.vic.edu.au.

Thank you to our current volunteer parent helpers who are doing a fabulous job covering our new library books, your time is much appreciated!

Pop-Up Mobile Design Library

Visual Communication Design students are currently undertaking research on individual projects covering subjects in graphic design, architecture and designing products. The students had access to a collection of design books in the library and a Pop-Up Mobile Design library was wheeled into their classroom with a selection of Art and Design books to further their research.

Stunning books I highly recommend and showcase in the Pop-Up Design Library include the fabulous Frances Burke – Designer of Modern Textiles. In this book, Nannette Carter and Robyn Oswald-Jacobs tell the story of Australia’s most influential designer of the 20th century. Her fabric designs included imagery and colours from native flora, marine life, indigenous and abstract imagery. Burke also collaborated with leading architects and interior designers, including Robin Boyd; her fabrics feature in influential modern buildings today.

I also recommend, the latest release, Mid-Century Modern – Icons of Design published by Thames & Hudson. This book features more than ninety classic mid-century designs, illustrated by studio 'Here Design', and will bring a touch of mid-century modern style into any home around Beaumaris.

For an exploration in visual thinking, I recommend the Graphic Design Play Book – beautifully designed, the book uses puzzles and challenges to demonstrate how typography, signage, posters, and visual identities work.

And lastly, Graphic Design School, a foundation course for graphic designers working in print, moving image and digital media. This new release and revised Seventh Edition feature all new assignments and updated reading lists. It is brimming with practical advice and real-world graphic design briefs.

Happy Reading to all our Visual Communication Design students!

Book Review

Eve D (Year 10 student)

'Crescent City: The House of Earth and Blood' is the first of an epic high fantasy duology by the author Sarah J Maas. The book follows Half-Fae and half-human Bryce Quinlan as she attempts to avenge her friends' murders and protect her vibrant city. I love the character Bryce because she is a strong female character that encourages body positivity. This book is different to the other books by this author because of its implementation of both modern and traditional fantasy themes. Sarah J Maas is able to create a vivid and exciting world with her unique settings, hilarious character bantering and plot twists that kept making me turn the page! I recommend this book and her other series: 'Throne of Glass' and 'A Court of Thorns and Roses' to anyone looking for a thrilling fantasy series.
