Sustainable Development Fieldwork

On the 26th of May, the 9/10 Sustainable Development class went on fieldwork to the Bayside Beaches. While exploring the essential questions of 'how can we effectively manage our coastal environment' and 'why is it important to manage the coastal environment,' we each came up with a fieldwork question to explore this prompt. Many people looked at the groynes (rockwall) at Sandringham, Hampton and Brighton beaches, while other topics included sea walls, native vegetation and cliff erosion. We also bumped into Dr Vicki Karalis at Sandringham beach, who is President of the Sandringham Foreshore Association and gave a great spiel about erosion and the effectiveness of hard-engineering strategies such as groynes. As this was our first attempt at fieldwork, the geography excursion was a great learning experience, and despite the drizzle, we were all able to collect our data efficiently. Overall, it was a great experience and a huge thanks to Ms Cain and Mr Deneys for taking us on the excursion.
