From the Head of Senior School

I begin my inaugural news by first expressing what a delight it has been to join the Girton Grammar community. From the students, staff, and parents who have warmly welcomed me, I have been humbled by the School's genuine warmth and community feel. During the holiday break, I acquainted myself with the delights that Bendigo has to offer, including the Easter Fair and the Elvis exhibition. I have also explored some of Bendigo's surrounding towns. As a migrant from the UK, it indeed reminds me of many places from my original hometown of Derby.
We began Term 2 with a representative number of Junior and Senior School students attending the ANZAC Day ceremony at both the Dawn and the mid-morning service. The school Captains laid wreaths at both events. Our first day of school began with an ANZAC commemorative assembly. It was beautiful for me to observe and participate in such an important first assembly after many months of not being able to gather for these special events.
It has been an action-packed two weeks of me navigating my way around the School grounds and meeting students formally and informally. My highlight in the first week was watching all students and staff participate in the Cross Country Carnival. The uniqueness of students running around a golf course was a new experience for me. At my prior school in Western Australia, Cross Country was running around the streets with an included lap of the oval. There were indeed fewer hills to climb!
This week I had the pleasure of attending the long-awaited production of Legally Blonde Jr. I witnessed the many talents of Girton Grammar students whose efforts and dedication were rewarded with a performance worthy of many accolades.
With the easing of restrictions, we now no longer need to wear masks in school. After almost two years of disruption and constant change, I am sure that students will be delighted with this new directive. Students, however, should ensure they constantly have a mask at hand when social distancing is not possible while on the school grounds. Students may also wear a mask if they wish while at school.
