From the Principal

Year 6 Leavers' Shirts, May 2022.

A highlight of National Reconciliation Week has been the Flag Raising Ceremony held at the front of the School this morning.

In the presence of our Indigenous students who spoke about their heritage and the meaning of the Aboriginal flag, it was raised to fly with our School and Australian flags and henceforth will fly every day the School is open.

It was a very moving occasion for all present, perhaps best exemplified by Year 8 student Jayde Trinidad who addressed the gathering with the following words:

"I would like to share my personal thoughts of what it means to have the Aboriginal Flag flying permanently at John Wollaston. It means so much to me as an Indigenous person that my school, John Wollaston, is proudly flying the Aboriginal Flag. This demonstrates John Wollaston’s pride and respect for the histories, cultures and contributions of Australia’s first people. Flying the Aboriginal Flag promotes a sense of community partnership and shows our school’s public statement of respect and commitment towards reconciliation. The Aboriginal flag flying at John Wollaston is a visible display of respect and appreciation for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders’ cultures, histories and people. Thank you."

The theme of this National Reconciliation Week has been Be Brave Make Change. I know these words are inspiring our Reconciliation Action Committee, under the leadership of Primary Dean of Teaching and Learning Fiona Currey, to develop a range of meaningful initiatives for our school community now and in the future.

Enrolments for 2023

The School is currently experiencing a strong phase of enrolment growth with interest in all year levels for 2023 and beyond.

Year 7, our main intake year in the Secondary School, is now full for 2023, taking us to four classes and a cohort of 128 students for the second year in a row.  I am still happy to receive applications and interview students for Year 7, however, students will be placed on a waiting list.

The majority of our Primary years are also now full or close to capacity. Should you be planning to enrol a sibling for next year, I urge you not to delay making application. This can be done through EnrolHQ on our website. Please also inform your friends if they are considering John Wollaston for their children’s education.

With good wishes for an enjoyable long weekend.
