Captains Corner

Last week we celebrated Book Week and on Friday we dressed up as our favourite character from a book.
This week for our Captains Corner piece, we each wrote about one of our favourite book characters and the reason they are important to us.
Isobel- My favourite book character is Kate Whetherall from the Mysterious Benedict Society, which is a TV series and a book series. Kate is a really efficient person, and carries around a bucket full of useful gadgets and objects. She really cares about the people around her, and is always willing to help people. When she is faced by difficulties, she uses her optimism to solve the problem. She loses her father at a very young age, but is finally reunited with him after a long adventure. Kate is always willing to try something new, and has many hobbies. She is very loyal to her friends, and will do anything for them, and she knows that they will do the same. Kate is my favourite book character because she has a kind and inspiring personality, and her optimism usually helps to save the day. She inspires me to always be optimistic, no matter what the situation is.
Weihan- My favourite character is Artemis Fowl from the Artemis Fowl series. Artemis is an intelligent person who has baffled people from all over the world. Although in the beginning he starts off as a villain type person, as the story unfolds, he learns and his character changes, revealing one of his goals was to help his sick mother. He lost his father at a young age due to a missile crashing into his ship. Artemis is a genius and in later books, he uses his intelligence for good, showing a change in character. He is able to work with others and bonds with the people that once were his foes. He is my favourite character because he is always assessing his situation and calculating how he can get out of it. When something does not work, he will try something different and will never give up.
Lexie – My favourite book character is Severus Snape from Harry Potter. Severus is a misunderstood soul that is grieving over his first love. Severus is rather stoic and appears to emphatically despise everyone especially Harry Potter. Throughout the series, the professor is displayed as a heartless monster with no empathy for others. It’s only when he dies towards the end that the readers find out what a truly spectacular human being he was. His character taught me that everyone deserves to be given a chance to prove themselves even if it takes a seven book series to do so. Snape is highly controversial because of acts he committed, but I strongly believe that Severus is a great character.
Joshua- My favourite book character is Gandalf from the Lord of the Rings. I like this character because it shows who we should be: Patient, precautious and intelligent when faced with certain dilemmas or situations. Gandalf is a wizard from Lord of the Rings who guides both Bilbo and Frodo who make up the main characters for the Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings. He is always calm and persistent and always somehow finds a way even when provided with none. I even dressed up as him last year for Book Week Dress Up Day, even though we were in lockdown. Gandalf is magical and both the side characters and the main character of many of Tolkien (the author)’s stories. I believe Gandalf is my favourite character because he inspires me to be calm and find a way in what may seem to be an unsolvable situation.
