Student Voice

Aladdin Jr.

Congratulations to the Year 5 and 6 students on such an outstanding performance of Aladdin.  Each student learnt songs, dances and dialogue. This is a huge collaborative effort between staff and students to put on this “glitz and glam” production.  It was fantastic to see so many parents, family, friends and staff coming to support the students.

This production has been in the making since the beginning of 2020 and was a wonderful way of celebrating our lives returning to normal - going to the theatre again and celebrating the Arts. We have been working on the show over the last 10 weeks.  Students had the choice to audition for Aladdin in front of Adele, Bron and I where they sang and read through the script.

During rehearsals we practiced singing, dancing, learning lines, creating characters and using expression with voice, body and face.

Each class were taught two songs from the show and if they wished to do an extra number they could rehearse for either a ‘Whole New World’ or ‘High Adventure’.  We began rehearsals during recess and lunchtimes until the three weeks prior to the performance nights.

At the start of Term 2, Naomi Greco (my mum), drew up the sets.  During the Term 2 school holidays, Vas, Erin, Michele and I painted the sets.  Maree Priest created 53 costumes for the show.  Michele and Jane sourced props in preparation.  Aarna, Chhavi and Gaurika sourced costumes, jewellery and helped me behind the scenes.  Without their help the cast would not have been dressed so colourfully.  In the last three weeks we started having full dress rehearsals of  Aladdin with the sets, costumes and props.

The 5/6 teachers put together sets, microphones, costumes, props and lighting changes for the show. None of whom have ever done these tasks before.  This is a huge task that made the performances run smoothly.  Backstage we had several teachers and other staff volunteer to supervise the students, do front of house and be on/off prompts side of the stage.

My main cast have been outstanding to work with.  They were able to learn lines quickly, create creative characters and had lots of fun while doing it.  I have been amazed at their ideas and choices for the delivery of lines and the enthusiasm that they brought to each rehearsal.  The rest of the cast brought energy and life to the stage in each song and dance.  I could not be prouder of each student who gave up extra time to put a smile on, not just my face but so many others.  They have made me laugh, cry and so many emotions in between during the run of the show. Thank you for making this process of being a director an easy one.

I look forward to next year’s musicals.  There will be one for Foundation, Year 1, Year 2 and Years 3/4.  More on what shows they will be in the weeks to come.
