Unit 1 & 2 Health and Human Development

Real Care Baby Program

Area of Study 1 in Unit 2 Health and Human Development focuses on the developmental transitions from youth to adulthood. Students inquire into factors that influence both the transition from youth to adulthood and later health status. Students examine parenthood as a potential transition in life. With a focus on the influence of parents/carers and families, students investigate factors that contribute to development, health and wellbeing during the prenatal, infancy and early childhood stages of the lifespan.

Students are in the process of participating in Real Care Baby Program. Students have the responsibility to care for an infant simulator overnight for 24 hours to understand the responsibilities involved in meeting the needs of a child. During the simulation, students need to respond to the baby’s cries, determine whether the baby needs feeding, burping, rocking, or changing. They also need to ensure the baby is dressed appropriately for the temperature and that the baby is handled correctly.

For many students it has been an eye-opening experience full of key learnings about the roles and responsibilities involved in parenting!
