Exciting Author Visit

This week we had the good fortune to have author Rohan Cleave visit St Augustine’s. The author of three stories about Australian threatened and endangered species spoke to our Years 1-4 students in our new 1/2 Auditorium. Rohan’s books include CBCA shortlisted Phasmid, about the Lord Howe Island Stick Insect, Bouncing Back, about the Eastern Barred Bandicoot, and the new book just released this last week On the trail of the Plains Wanderer

The students were enthralled about the creatures, the writing and illustrating process of producing a book and Rohan’s life and career. They asked some amazing questions and showed they had thought deeply about what they were hearing. Some of our students left the auditorium determined to be writers or illustrators.

Our Library copies of the books now include Rohan’s signature!

Children’s Book Week - Dreaming with eyes open

Book Character Parade

Our annual Book Character Parade occurred on Friday 26th August. Thank you to all who helped students with their outfits for the parade. A huge thank you also to the many parents and carers who were able to attend the parade itself. The outfits included old favourites like Thing 1 and Thing 2; Where’s Wallly (or Wanda) and, of course, Harry and Hermione from Harry Potter. There were some unusual ones such as dinosaurs and dragons, Polly Palmer from the Magician’s Nephew (The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe) as well as new favourites like Bluey.

If you would like to watch our short video you can find it on the school website under Links/Book Week 2022 or on SIMON/PAM under Library Links.

Congratulations to our Book Week competition winners Zoe from Years 5/6 and Jeremy from Years 1/2.

Well done to all those who entered!  We had over 50 entries this year.

Shadower’s Choice Awards

The CBCA Sun project involved 155 groups of young people also judging the shortlisted books for the Children’s Book of the Year Awards. Groups were given one of the CBCA shortlist categories to read and judge. The Shadowers’ Choice Awards were announced last Friday, 2nd September. It was interesting to see that they mirrored our student votes on our voting wall. The winning books in each category were:

Older readers - Sugar Town Queens(Malla Nunn, A&U)

Younger readers - Rabbit, Soldier, Angel, Thief (Katrina Nannestad, ABC Books)

Early childhood - Walk of the Whales (Nick Bland, HGCP)

Picture book of the year - Stellarphant(James Foley, Fremantle Press)

Eve Pownall Award - The Illustrated Encyclopaedia of Peculiar Pairs in Nature (Sami Bayly, Hachette).

Library Lessons

Students are looking at digital technology skills during our Tech Titans unit for the last three weeks of this term. Last week we looked at collecting data. Foundation to Year 2 students listened to the story ‘Other Brother’ and then collected and sorted data about their families. They turned this into a graph of dots of different colours inside a house.

The Years 3-6 students looked at the Treehouse series and collected data about the themes for the different additions to the treehouse and what that might tell us about the characters and the author/illustrator team of Andy Griffiths and Terry Denton.

This week we have listened to stories about cycbersafety and rules around using technology. Next week students will learn some basic coding skills using stories where steps are repeated and use the Hour of Code website to practise and play with coding. https://hourofcode.com/au/learn
