From the Dorms

JUNIOR GIRLS

I play the flute and I am part of the Student Concert Band, I rehearse every Wednesday from 4 pm - 6:30 pm at the Conservatorium of Music in Wagga playing the flute in the Concert Band and Riverina Youth Orchestra.

On Thursday night I went out to Wagga University to perform in the Wagga Eisteddfod - band section championships where we played against 11 different bands and ensembles from around the area. It was a great experience but a long night as the concert band I am in was the last band to play after 4 long hours of watching others. We played two songs and with great success, won 1st place over the whole section.

SENIOR GIRLS

The last few weeks have been fraught with levels of anxiety over the Year 12 trial exams and Year 11 Prelim exams. The study times each night have been very quiet as the two-year levels work hard on the content they need to know. Of course, now it is count down to the HSC and the start of new and exciting adventures for the Year 12’s and changes for Year 11 becoming year 12 students.

“Be the change that you wish to see in the world.”

― Mahatma Gandhi

“I hope you see things that startle you. I hope you feel things you never felt before. I hope you meet people with a different points of view. I hope you live a life you’re proud of. If you find that you’re not, I hope you have the strength to start all over again.”

GAP YEAR

Next year I’ll be taking a gap year and working in the UK for 12 months!

I decided that I would do so before studying at university when I came back from a school excursion to Italy in 2018. This experience was undoubtedly the catalyst for my travel bug and as such, I started exploring ways to see different parts of the world and meet new people. After initially reaching out to numerous boarding schools in the UK myself I found the program LetzLive. We did an interview and I was introduced to St Lawrence College in Ramsgate, Kent. Commencing on the 3rd of January 2023 I’ll be working as a ‘Gap Tutor’ with the pre-prep and prep boarding school students aged 3-12. My role is to help them with their homework and keep them occupied and active by running various activities. Situated on the South-East coast near Dover I’m only an hour away from France!

I’m looking forward to meeting all the other ‘Gappies’ that are also going through LetzLive, travelling around Europe, and going to ‘Love on Tour - Harry Styles’ in Paris in my four months' worth of holidays.

Annabelle Cassidy | Year 12  Student

My plan for 2023 is to take a gap year from studying and travel to the countries surrounding England. Whilst travelling I have also obtained a job working at Kings Hall Pre Prep school as a boarding house supervisor and teachers assistant throughout the day.

Kings Hall Pre Prep is situated in Somerset and has boarders from all over the UK as well as day students.  My role will include; assisting in children's physical and academic learning, coaching school representative sports, and supervising and maintaining positive boarding life for students. I, like Annabelle, went through LetzLive to find a school in the UK to complete a GAP year.  I will be travelling with Annabelle Cassidy in late December and starting my time in the school’s second semester. I look forward to meeting many new people and exposing myself to new experiences over the year!

TAFE OPPORTUNITY

Commencing on Friday, July 29 2022, the 'Girls Can Too!'

Wagga program began aiming to encourage young women into male-dominated industries. Each Friday over nine weeks of Term 3, several young women from schools around Wagga Wagga including Kildare and Mater Dei Catholic Colleges went to Wagga TAFE.  The young women attend TAFE to learn about many different industries including Engineering and Fabrication, Electronics, Automotive, Construction, and Electrical trades, along with several industry tours and work readiness training days. All of the young women have been able to achieve many things, including tyre changing competitions with the best time being 56 seconds, making a small wine and cheese platter table along with many other amazing things. Overall, this TAFE opportunity provides this group of girls with a large skill set to offer in the future and will open many different opportunities and experiences for the future. This TAFE course is encouraging girls to get their trade on’ and discover a feel for certain trades that they may not have expected or known about. Throughout the duration of the TAFE course, the women have been able to see the trades they are learning about put to work. An aspect of this TAFE course includes a week of work experience, giving them a first-hand idea of the trade of their choice. Students are required to participate in a week of work experience, before graduation in late September 2022. I have been lucky enough to be one of those young women experiencing this TAFE trade course through ‘Girls Can too”.

Junior Boys

The junior boys have had a great 3rd term and have become very creative when it comes to filling in their time at boarding school on past cold Winter days. Board games have been popular and a homemade indoor bowling alley was a real hit.  This photo shows the glass doors. We moved to a more suitable area shortly after for obvious reason. (Jack O and Mac D and Hugh R.)

The boys have also enjoyed ball games at the oval and courts and also utilised the Hall when the weather was poor. (see Albert M).

Congratulations to Kai and Rohan for participating in the CCC athletics carnival this week in Sydney.  Kai came 5th in shot put and Rohan had a personal best in Discus. Quite an achievement. Well done boys.

Kai played in his grand final rugby league for magpies and got man of the match. The score was 16 to 10. Sensational!

Senior Boys

Spring is upon us and that means the end of term 3. The winter months have been extremely busy for the senior boys. Both Year 12 and Year 11 have had trial exams, while the Year 12 students also had their Graduation, which was a terrific night.

Congratulations to Harvey Hines who created his band Depazzi, and played their first gig at Ladysmith on the weekend. The band plays Groove metal and was formed in 2021 with the Lead singer Harvey Hines, the Guitarist Charlie Jackson, the Bassist Griffin Richardson and the Drummer Hamish Comtesse. The groove metal band formed through Mater Dei and the photos below are  of the first gig performed

Many students have been playing football of all codes, during the winter and some have made it to the finals. Ronan has been playing for Wagga United in the under 16’s competition. Last week they beat the previously unbeaten Henwood Park 4-0 to make it to the grand final. We wish Ronan all the best for next week's game.

This week was the final of the Creed Cup, where we had  Ronan and Joe representing Kildare and Will, Ethan, Matt, and Kaleb representing Mater Dei. As we can see by the photos taken after the game, Kildare came out on top by 2-0. Congratulations to Kildare Catholic College.

Angus (Tumut) and Rusty (Brothers) playoff in the Under 16’s Group 9 grand final. Both teams have played twice this year with Brothers winning both encounters. Angus is hoping Tumut can reverse the trend and come up trumps. Good luck to both students.

Some of our Year 12 students will leave MEBS at the end of the term, whilst others will return for the HSC. I’ve been extremely privileged to get to know these young men over the past two years and wish them every success in their future endeavours.

Will English

We conceded a penalty in the first half and went into the 2nd half one nil down. We scored a goal to equalise and the score remained 1-1 for the final minutes of the game. The game ended up going into a golden goal consisting of 5 mins halves with no breaks in between. The first 5 minutes passed and we remained level. It was around the last minutes of extra time where we scored to win the game 2-1 and ensure it didn’t prevail to a penalty shootout.

Grand final Rivalry

Rusty playing for Wagga Brothers Rugby team in the recent Grandfinal, defeated Angus' team the Tumut Blues:      Final score: 12- 02
