From the Leader
of Boarding
Dear Boarding Community,
Hi Everyone,
The end of Term 3 is very close at the time of writing this newsletter. Just when we think everything is on track for a relatively normal end of term, we have a special day of mourning for the late Queen Elizabeth II on Thursday 22.
This one-off public holiday will mean that Mount Erin closes at 4.00 pm on Wednesday 21. The normal Friday bus transport will operate on this day. If your child normally uses this transport, please advise the Boarding Office if intending to have alternative arrangements.
Year 12 HSC Examinations
We wish the Year 12 HSC Boarders all the best with their preparation for the coming exams. A survey has been shared with the students to help organise student movement in/ out of boarding during this time. Lunches are arranged directly with Dave Lugton for KCC and the Mater Dei Cafe during this time.
HENTY FIELD DAYS
Mount Erin will be attending the Henty Field Days on Tuesday 20, Wednesday 21, and Thursday 22. We will be sharing a stall with our sister/ brother Boarding school, Saint Francis De Sales.
New Staff Member
It is with pleasure that I introduce our new Junior Girls' Supervisor, Ms Jane Chrichton.
Jane has worked previously in boarding at Frensham School in Mittagong.
TAFE - Work Experience Student
From time to time TAFE students undertake work placement with our Catering Manager in the Mount Erin Kitchen. Bianca was with us during week 9 helping to prepare food and getting used to working in a kitchen environment.
Student Well Being
Prominent adolescent psychologist, Dr. Michael Carr-Gregg presented at the recent Australian Boarding Schools' Association Conference in Brisbane in August. He opened by saying that the World Health Organisation had formally recognized that COVID-19 was a well-being pandemic. Whilst young people recovered physically from COVID-19. , many had not mentally with anxiety and depression proving to be common symptoms. Counselors have been under increased pressure due to the number of children involved, and no one approach has been effective. Risk factors include access to the internet and anxiety and inability to cope with stress. There is a need to develop resilience and a positive mentality.
Involvement in physical activity and balance of lifestyle is one key along with good nutrition and sleep. Whilst the mobile phone is connected to the dark side via the internet, its ability to source of offline apps that can be used to promote good health.
Examples of recommended apps for assisting with well-being are:
Reach Out Australia
MoodFit
Smiling Mind
Worry Time
3 Good Things
7 Minute Work Out
Calm Harm
All the best to our Boarders and families for the coming holiday break and hopefully some sunshine.
