DEVOTION

Forgiveness

We were treated to an entertaining explanation of the book of Philemon in Worship this week. Students in 3B acted out a modern retelling of the story, showing us how Paul encouraged Philemon to do as Jesus does and forgive Onesimus.

The book of Philemon is found right towards the end of the Bible, tucked away between Titus and Hebrews. It is a letter written by Paul to a man named Philemon, a wealthy Christian and a slave owner. One of his slaves, Onesimus, had escaped and ran away to Rome. Onesimus met Paul in Rome and heard the good news about Jesus. When he became a Christian, Onesimus returned to Philemon with a letter from Paul. This letter urged Philemon to forgive Onesimus and to welcome him back not as a slave, but as a brother in Christ.

Forgiveness is not easy, but it is at the very core of Christian faith. Jesus died on the cross to forgive each of us our sins. As 3B asked in Worship, ‘What would Jesus do?’ He forgives, and he asks us to do the same.
