Spotlight on a Staff Member - Alumni

By Shelly De Gabriel and Nassem Nabil - Year 9

In this edition we feature former student and current staff member, Mr Tonny Luu, who is our Technology Support Officer.

What year did you graduate from James Busby high school? 2007

What was your favorite subject? Electronics (IT)

What was your favorite year of highschool? Year 10

How has the school changed? The teachers’ efforts have remained the same, but the students have changed in the way they approach things and their style.

What made you want to come back? I was torn between electrical engineering or IT, and I talked to Mr Kwon and he gave me the opportunity to work here part-time while I was going to university. He really helped me decide what career to choose, and I knew the people who fostered me into the person I am today.

If there was anything you could change about this school, what would it be? I would provide a wider range of resources to allow students to engage in projects they are passionate about. It is something we have been working towards, with the camera equipment, computers and laptops, and we want to introduce more for students to choose and foster what students are interested in. Like with photography or 3D printing, we want to get high end equipment or anything students may need to choose fields they like.

What's a memorable moment you had at school? I think the best thing about it is really seeing the kids changing and growing into who they are now, and something they are actually passionate about. I’ve seen students from Year 7-10 where they start to get bogged down by the day-to-day, and it's not really until Year 11 and 12 where they start coming out of their shells and showing their interests and pride in what they want to do.

Do you wish you were anywhere else? No. The amount of challenges we are faced with let us grow as a person, even in our careers, we see so many things which makes it really interesting and we’re always up for the challenge.

Are there any teachers that are still here that taught you? Oh yeah, definitely Mr Garzaniti, Ms Welfare. I’m just trying to remember…

What other teachers that work with you used to be students with you? There's one that isn’t here right now, who is Ms Robibaro.

We would like to thank Mr Luu for the time he spent in this interview, and the time he spends fixing devices at our school and being the man when it comes to technology.
