Year 8 History

Year 8 History Excursion to “Heatherbrae”, 73 Neerim Road, Caulfield

On 1st August, the two year eight classes 8G and 8H had the opportunity to visit one of Melbourne oldest original properties, 73 Neerim Road. As one of the students who had the chance to visit this heritage house, it was like going back in time, there was an 1870-1900 old original oven and there were horse stables at the back of the house, where you could legally have horses living with you. It was certainly a different era.

It was a house that I will never forget and if you have a chance to swing by I would certainly recommend seeing this one-of-a-kind property. However, it also had its drawbacks, seven years ago a lady who had been the resident of the house for ninety years passed away, and ever since the house hasn’t been occupied, other than a couple of uninvited squatters. The rooms of the house have become in disrepair, had been neglected and plants were sprouting off the walls. In other words, it would need multi-millions of dollars to bring it back to its glory days.

One of the reasons that it would need so much money poured into it is because of its heritage listing on the front of the property. This means that the structure of the property must remain in its original state, as it was in 1870, as well as including the horse's stables at the back of the house.

Stretching 3252m2, you can renovate however you would like on the inside and it could be the next big Caulfield vintage-modern mansion.

Thanks, Miss Fisher, Mr Brown and Mr Derham (Director of Abercromby's Real estate) for this opportunity that we will never forget.
