GECPA Term 3

“Communication is like riding a bicycle or typing. If you’re willing to work at it, you can rapidly improve the quality of every part of your life.’ Brian Tracy

Isn’t communication important in every aspect of our lives. There has been quite a bit of discussion lately about how to effectively communicate with the College. It could be parents and carers wanting more information about assignments and excursions or understanding what your child is up to at school.

In keeping with the GECPA constitution our aims and objectives are to work in cooperation with the Principal and School Council to contribute to the wellbeing of the school community (among others). Communication is a big part of that.

Parents Victoria, the peak body for parent associations in Victoria, have developed a Tip Sheet for parents and carers. It’s based on the message of “Think, Wait, Communicate”. GECPA are members of Parents Victoria and are happy to share this information with parents and carers at GEC.

The Tip Sheet covers:

  • What to consider before you make contact with the school.
  • How to communicate effectively with the school.
  • Before, during and after you meet with school staff.

It’s a great read. Think. Wait. Communicate - Parents Victoria

Our next GECPA meeting is 14 September at 7:30pm – Feel free to contact us should you want to attend at:gecpa@gec.vic.edu.au

Working Bees

Our next Working Bee will be on Sunday, 18 September, 3pm - 5pm (meet on Booran Road near the entrance to the College). We need volunteers to do things like sweep leaves and pick up litter and check the fencing on recent garden plantings.

National Tree Day Planting

On Friday 29 July 5 Year 12 students planted 12 correa indigenous flowering bushes in gardens behind the PAC with parent Cathy McNaughton. Plants along the Booran Road fence near the PAC are growing well from the last 2 years of plantings by students and GECPA families. Plants include a mix of plants indigenous to Caulfield with red and white flowers and silver foliage and some hardy red garden flowers and silver foliage plants – GEC colours! This Cathy’s 14th school planting at GEC and Caulfield Primary School. Hope you enjoy the gardens!

Bandanna Day

I’m taking part in Canteen’s Bandanna Day this year by selling bandannas to support young people when cancer crashes into their world.

Canteen is the game changer. They help young people cope with cancer in their family, rebuild their foundations and connect with others in the same boat.

Please help me to reach my goal and together we can take a stand for young people affected by cancer.

Thank you for your support!

Caulfield Racecourse Recreation Reserve – Glen Eira Climate Action Group

The GECAN Caulfield Racecourse Sub-Group, (GECAN-CRR) has been keeping track of happenings at the Caulfield Racecourse. The Racecourse Land Management Plan (LMP) sets out extensive building plans for the Racecourse Reserve – see www.crrt.org.au

The Melbourne Racing Club is now building a second track for night racing due to be completed next June. Many locals are disappointed at the resulting restricted access to the Reserve.

The LXRP is proposing to use the Neerim Stables site (opposite Manchester Road, Glen Huntly) for a works yard for the Neerim Road level crossing works. Dozens of mature, native trees on this site are at risk of damage or removal from the works yard ahead of future extensive buildings planned by the Land Management Plan.
