Grade 1/2

Numeracy:

In Grade 1 maths, we have been working hard to really consolidate our place value knowledge. We have been using lots of concrete materials to help us and we have had fun practising our skip counting forwards and backwards by 2's, 5's and 10's.

Grade 2's are continuing their focus on multiplication and this week we have had a strong focus on making equal groups and identifying repeated addition as a precursor to multiplying.

Literacy:

In Readers Workshop, we have been focussing on 'connections'. Students have been learning about making connections to self, connections to other texts and connections to the world when reading. Making connections is a great way to strengthen comprehension skills and make sure that students are really developing a deep understanding of the texts that they are reading.

In Writers Workshop, we are learning about 'narratives'. Students have been learning about the structure of a narrative story (beginning, middle and end) as well as identifying characters, settings, problems and solutions within the stories. We are looking forward to planning and having a go at writing our own fictional narratives in the coming weeks.

Inquiry:

In Inquiry, we are continuing our unit for the term focussing on 'Now and Then'. This week we looked at how modes of transport have evolved over time. Students wrote and drew about different types of transport in the olden days compared with now days and we watched a fun little clip called Transport over Time that showed a timeline of some of the more interesting forms of transport. The Grade 1's wondered if in the future any of us might arrive at school by jet propulsion or on a hoverboard! Here is the 2 minute clip if you would like to take another look at it at home.
