Celebrate the life and work of poet, Francis Webb

After a two year hiatus, the annual reading of the poetry of St Pius X College alumni, Francis Webb (1925-73), returns to Willlougby City Library. This year, we are thrilled to be represented by aspiring poet, Jack Lonergan of Year 11. Recently, Jack’s poetry received a Nan Manefield Award. Jack will read a poem by Webb along with a student from Christian Brothers’ High School Lewisham, as Francis went to both schools. In those day St Pius X College did not offer the Leaving Certificate and Francis travelled by train across the newly completed Harbour Bridge to Lewisham to complete his schooling.

MC Toby Davidson (Macquarie University, poet, author & editor of Webb’s Collected Poems) will be joined by Associate Professor Michael Griffith (ACU & Webb's biographer) and a select cast of poet readers to read and discuss Webb’s poetry.

If you’ve never heard of Francis Webb, this is an opportunity to get acquainted with Webb’s prodigious talent and also to support Jack. If you’d like to learn more about Francis Webb, click to our library website

Saturday 30 July 2022, 2.15 pm – 4.45 pm at Chatswood Library on The Concourse

The photograph was taken in Francis’ backyard. Francis’ house stands on the corner of Johnson & Neridah Streets, Chatswood and is owned by the President of the Willoughby District Historical Society; it is little changed.

Acer High Schools Cup Finalists - Australian Esports league - 3rd place - John Badger-Rahme

During Term 2 John Badger-Rahme of Year 9 participated in the AEL’s (Australian Esports League) high school division Super Smash Brothers Ultimate (SSBU) tournament.

His report follows:

"The competition was comprised of 53 players from different schools, who all put up a good fight. There were four main rounds and then finals. Over the course of four weeks, players would be assigned into a bracket and play best of three or five in a double elimination style bracket; the higher you ranked in the week the more points you were given. In the end I placed both 2nd and 4th twice, which led me to place 3rd in the final week. The competition was a blast to compete in and I cannot wait to play in next term's competition against even better players. A special thanks to Mr Gillogly for allowing me the opportunity to represent the school."

John Badger-Rahme, Year 9
