Year 5 News

Another great fortnight for the Year 5s. A lot has happened in the past couple of weeks, a New Unit of Inquiry, 100 Days of School for our Prep Buddies.

Inquiry

This week the students commenced their next Unit of Inquiry, How We Express Ourselves: An individual’s actions and perceptions can be influenced through media and advertising. This unit will focus on the purpose of media, the way information can be presented to directly influence the consumer, being an informed and critical consumer of media and the way advertising and media directly influences our lives. We began the unit by breaking down the three main purposes of media influence, Entertain, Inform/Educate and Pursuade.

Literacy

The Year 5s have begun their reading group, with the primary focus being 'Main Ideas'. With explicit modelling by the teacher, the students have had to break down short stories into paragraphs and discuss the main idea being presented in each.

Maths

This week we are approaching the end of our focus on fractions. The students have thoroughly enjoyed exploring the different strategies involved with equivalent fractions, fractions on a number line, improper fractions, and mixed numbers, adding and subtracting, multiplying, and simplifying fractions. 

100 Days of Prep

The Year 5s were excited to help celebrate this very special and important milestone with their buddies. We joined the Preps to help colour, cut out and put together a '100 Days of Prep' crowns. Once they had completed their crowns, the students were able to colour and create a 100-day board game.
