Students heard from a range of inspiring guest speakers around the themes of inclusivity, opportunity, and how to effect change in our local communities through small actions.

Teen Mental Health First Aid Course

Our Student Leadership Team started their Teen Mental Health First Aid Course (tMHFA) this week. The course will be taught over 3 x 60mins sessions by Julie McKay from Latrobe Regional Health, who is a trained facilitator.

Students will learn how to provide mental health first aid to their friends. Mental health problems covered include Anxiety and depression, eating disorders, alcohol and other drug disorders and psychosis. Mental health crisis covered include suicidal thoughts and behaviours, non-suicidal self-injury, intoxication, bullying and abuse.

At the end of the course these students will be accredited Teen Mental Health First Aiders. Research with high school students who receive tMHFA students report reduced stigma, increased confidence in supporting a peer with a mental health problem and are also able to recognise certain adults as helpful to a peer with a mental health problem.

Wellington Ways to Wellbeing – Chloe Curran

A healthy mind is just as important as a healthy body for your overall wellbeing. Since early this year, behind the scenes of our leadership team within our school, we have been working with Wellington’s five ways to wellbeing. These five strategies have been put in place throughout wellington youth to teach people like you, how to support mental wellbeing of yourselves and others around you.

The five ways include connect, be active, keep learning, be aware and help others. Throughout the activities we have been holding within the school, we have been and will continue incorporating these five ways to promote looking after mental and emotional wellbeing throughout our peers.
