Academic Excellence

Semester Two update

Tournament of Minds Competition

OUR Semester Two Academic Excellence students have started the new semester at a hectic pace. All students are involved in the Tournament of Minds (TOM) competition which opened this term. The four teams have just six weeks to find a solution to their chosen challenge. The students must do research, write a script and prepare a skit that presents their solution and must make all props, costumes, and ICT by themselves.

Two teams have chosen to attempt the STEM challenge, GOLD RUSH, where they must build a moving platform to display a large nugget of gold. They must also include ICT to explain the maths behind their platform design. Another team have chosen the Arts challenge, WHO ARE YOU? For this challenge, the students need to use clues (body painting, jewellery, clothing) to identify a mystery person at a police station who cannot talk. They must also discover a secret hidden message. The fourth team have chosen a Social Sciences challenge, THE CIRCLES OF TIME. The team have discovered remains of a historic circle. They need to explain what it was made of, where it was found, its significance and why it should be preserved.

The students will need to present their solutions to the challenges to a group of judges at Edith Cowan, Joondalup on Saturday 27 August. Credit must go to all the students for their dedication to the competition so far. They have given time before school, lunchtimes and after school to attend extra sessions to be find the best solution and way to present it.

Thank you to Mrs Miranda, Ms Lim and Miss MaGee for taking on the role of being facilitators for the teams.

Well done and best of luck for the rest of the competition!

Year 7 Homework Help

Year 7 Homework Help has returned this term on Thursdays from 3:30 – 4:30pm in the Library. All Year 7 students are welcome to attend. Possible aspects that students may seek assistance for include help with homework for any subject, revision of topics they are finding difficult and general organisation (diary, locker, etc). All they need to do is ask! Thank you to the Year 9 Mentors who are volunteering their time to be available to assist the Year 7s.
