Conserving water, saving trees

National Tree Day

NATIONALTree Day - celebrated on the first Sunday of August - is Australia’s largest community tree-planting and nature care event. Around 300,000 volunteers devote this day to engage in environmental activities that educate Australians about the world around them. This year, the Climate Canons observed National Tree Day on Monday, 1 August with an exciting lunchtime quiz for students to spin the wheel and answer topical questions about trees and deforestation. Students learnt new information from our informative boards and thank you to Miss Alex Muir and Mrs Geraldine Martin for designing a beautiful tree painting, where students pledged their name to support the environment.

Water Corporation Think Tank Challenge

In 2021, a group of Year 9 and 10 Climate Canons attended their first Think Tank Challenge and progressed to the finals. This year's Water Corporation Think Tank Challenge, held on Tuesday, 2 August at Perth College, was an exciting opportunity for Ariana Mecham, Charlotte Weiland, Indianna O’Brien, Charlize Smith-Sarginson, Angela George, Chhavi Chavan, Ruth Tlumang and Izumi Carmelia to come up with bold ideas, thoughtful planning and ambitious goals to the challenge statement “We care about the environment in which we operate. How can we prepare for the future?” The girls worked hard on their pitch to design a primary school curriculum-based website where students could learn about helping the environment and learn sustainable behaviours from a young age. All schools involved put forward great ideas and the Climate Canons made the College proud. Unfortunately with only two schools moving forward to the finals, 2022 was not our year. It was an excellent experience with teamwork, problem solving and time management all being worked on by our courageous Climate Canons, great work!
