Year 7 Dune Care

Students in yellow raincoats at Whites Beach

UNITE: Well done to our volunteer Year 7 students for your work down at the dunes on Monday and Wednesday.  Students cared for the sand dunes by removing the invasive tea tree and planting young native plants to the area.  They showed fantastic team work and a care for our wonderful local environment as they worked to protect it from erosion and human damage.  A massive thank you to Alex from Fisheries for leading the Dune Care Initiative and all students efforts- especially in the rain!

Year 9 Student Leadership

STRIVE: Our Year 9 School for Student Leadership students, Lily, Nash, Shinay & Riley arrived at the Snowy Campus on Sunday 17th July.   The students have settled in well and are making some new friendships in their first 2 weeks at the Snowy Campus.  They have had plenty of team building and skill building activities to help them connect to their new community.  The students have shared their SWAY (daily journal) which SCSC staff and the students’ families are thoroughly enjoying!

FLOURISH: Congratulations to Brooke H (Year 12) and Steve G (Year 10) who have been selected for the Geelong Gallery Who's Who exhibition. This exhibition will be running from the 6th to 28th August, so be sure to make time to visit. Both students whose work so thoughtfully explored their sense of self and relationship to others was received at the Gallery and we wish them success in the judging.

Year 8 students have begun their new art semester with great motivation. 8E and 8C are currently working on transforming their scientific studies of fish and birds into fragile elegant sculptures made of bamboo and rice paper. One of the more ambitious works being a wedge tail eagle with a wingspan of over 3 metres!

I CAN Program

STRIVE:  I CAN Network facilitated a school-based mentoring program which is a support network for selected students.  They teach teamwork, working out interests and strengths, wellbeing and identity, communication and planning and organising. This in turn encourages self-acceptance, belonging, optimism and confidence.

Inter Girls Netball

UNITE:  On July 18th, select students represented the College competing in the Inter-School Inter Girls Netball at Geelong Sports Hub in South Geelong.

VET Sport & Recreation: Rock Climbing

RESPECT: Part of the VET Sport and Recreation curriculum is to trial a variety of recreational activities. Last week, students enjoyed their time participating in indoor rock climbing as an introductory for our future outdoor rock-climbing session. This provided a hands-on experience for them to not only have fun, but understand the safety requirements of this recreational activity.

Coast to Coast Program

UNITE: Northern Bay College Principal Scott Diamond, Stoofa (Stephoen Lewry) and their fantastic students welcomed Surf Coast Secondary College students (Year 9/10) to enjoy a brilliant football based session, sharing their knowledge, skills and expertise with each other.  It was also a chance to get to know each other's stories about their families, interests and goals.

Local Police from Corio (who also assist in their sports based program) attended as well as Olivia Purcell AFLW Melbourne, former Geelong/Richmond player Craig Biddiscombe, Liam Brady (AFL Victoria) and Mark Burgess (VFL Victoria).

It was a sensational session for all that were involved and Surf Coast Secondary College will host Northern Bay College in the coming weeks.
