Sport News

Mr Derek Lennon, Head of Sport

Term 3 has reached the halfway mark with the AIC competition taking a mid-term break for the EKKA holiday. This week is a great chance for boys and staff to re-charge and re-focus for the return to training next week and a full assault at the last month of competition for team sports in 2022.

Last weekend saw Marist travel to Villanova in basketball, tennis and rugby league in AIC and the hockey team took on Padua on Friday night. Overall it was a successful weekend with the hockey boys having a draw to keep their season alive, basketball coming unstuck against a very strong Villa First V and our First IV tennis boys keeping the dream alive with a win on countback to remain undefeated this year.

Hockey - Ms Kathryn Badini

Last week the hockey team faced Padua College at Burringbar Park on Friday afternoon. A huge thank you should firstly go to Ben Bremner (11) who stepped into goalie at the last minute; or to be more specific, Break 1 Friday. It’s no mean feat to get padded up and face those shots, and he made some terrific saves. Additionally, Harry Condon (11) and Harry Cunynghame (11) to the team helped to strengthen our midline. What unfolded was a nail-biter of a game. With two quick goals from Padua, we were down two-nil; luckily, however, our boys combined with Nick Keir (11) able to get a breakaway ball up to Zander Holliday who got a convincing goal and Oliver Shinkel (10) who was able to set up Sebastian Karamihas (11) who tapped in our second goal. In the second half, Padua again scored quickly but then Nick was able to turn a defensive short corner into another goal for us making the result 3-all. Unfortunately, despite how dominant we were in the last quarter of the game, we weren’t able to get another goal – the difference an extra 10 seconds may have made! We now take on Kelvin Grove State High for the final round which will now determine our placing for finals.

Rugby League - Mr Ryan Apps

What a round of rugby league last Saturday versus Villanova was - we always knew it would be tough games for most year age group teams and it did not disappoint. A fantastic result with Marist being undefeated in every age group, a brilliant result and one which saw some amazing footy being played by our teams.

Again, our Marist teams stood up and gave all they had, and I must say I am very proud of them, as should everyone. It was again fantastic to see all teams supporting each other, the Marist culture and spirit were on show for all to see.

The coaches have been developing their teams and now we are starting to see this in the weekend’s performances, not everyone will always win but if the teams are giving everything, they have who can ask anymore, we should all stand together and be very proud of them.

Thank you to the parents for your support and assistance in all aspects towards our coaches and the development of our rugby league program, we will continue to strive hard to develop the program over this season and for seasons to come.

This coming weekend is a no-play bye round for all AIC schools so the next game will be Saturday, August 20th versus Padua at Padua sporting fields. I hope you all enjoy the weekend off and the teams come back off this mini break ready to go for another round of Rugby League. Best Wishes to you and your families.

1st XIII - Connor Lyons - 1st Rugby League Captain

The First XIII boys travelled out to Wynnum on Saturday to take on Villanova in a match that proved the depth of the Marist rugby league program. Although the game kicked off to a rocky start with Villa scoring out wide early in the match, Ashgrove retaliated with strong carries from Tom Weaver and Toby Anderson, which laid a good platform for Rory Baker, Jimmy Boland and Jude Knapp to get Marist back into the game with tries before the halftime break. The boys came out firing again in the second, with dominant defence by the Barry brothers, Tasman and Jasper putting lots of pressure on Villa's playmakers and forcing several errors. With the game tied up at 16 all, Rory Baker and debutant five-eight Jude Knapp stepped up to take the game out, each bagging another meat pie to secure a double and round the game out 28-16.

First V – Round 3 vs Villanova College

Coach’s Report

The 1st V made the trip out to Coorparoo to take on Villanova. We knew that we were going to have to play a near-perfect game to compete with them. We spent a lot of time at practice working on ways to negate their full-court pressure and relentless attack on the rim and we were ready to give it our best against the #1 team in the AIC. We started off really well, our body language, energy and talk were on point and we pushed Villanova for the first half. The ball movement, defensive pressure and outside shooting was exceptional. Unfortunately, we weren’t able to sustain it during the second half. Villanova ramped up their pressure which resulted in sloppy turnovers and easy baskets for them. Their lead quickly blew out and we spent the rest of the game trying to play catch up. Villanova have been the benchmark for AIC basketball for the last few years and we’re hoping to see us learn some lessons from Saturday that will help us take forward steps as the season continues to unfold.

Captain’s Report

Seen as the heavy premiership favourites, Villa were going to be a tough game to really test the perseverance and strength of the Marist team. The game began with speed and high paced scoring, which saw Villa pull away to an early lead, however, the boys held their own bringing it back to within 4 points after the first. This continued into the second quarter with Villa pulling away and Marist staying on the back foot, yet the boys stayed close, and finished the half within 5. With Vice Captain Aiden Gibbons out for the game, and niggles throughout the team leading up to the game, it was going to be a test to see the boys stay strong. Some impressive scoring by Villa in the second half, and some basic mistakes by Marist led to the game getting away from the boys.

Internal Basketball Competition

With the popularity of basketball at MCA there have been an unprecedented number of boys who have missed the opportunity to play Term 3 AIC basketball. There were over 150 boys from Year 7 to Year 9 who missed out on selection.

The College would like to reintroduce an Internal Basketball Competition for those boys who have missed out, for boys in Years 7-9. The competition would be played in a gala day format over 3 weekends with teams playing 3-4 games each day. It is proposed to run this competition on 27 August, 3 September and 10 September. Games would be played 11:00am – 1:00pm, at Marist College.

At this stage, we are seeking an expression of interest from interested Year 7-9 students. It is envisaged that boys will be able to enter as a team or as an individual, and be placed into a team.

It is hoped that following a successful competition that the format could be increased next year.

There is a lot coming up with Met North, AIC lead-up meets and the Marist camp in the holidays. Keep an eye out for more information on the College App and by email for all these activities.

Tennis - Mr Andrew Ward

What a fantastic week we have had this week leading up to our match v Villanova College. The boys trained really well all week and given the amount of sickness with boys and covid-19 related issues, we were able to put a team on the courts. This week loomed as a huge test for all our teams challenging for a premiership so a good result will set us up for a good finish to the season.

So far in the AIC we have been undefeated in the 1st IV team 3-0, 9A team 3-0, 8A team 3-0, 7A team 3-0 and 10A 2-1.

For me, it is extremely pleasing to see the results of our Squad Coaching programs which I believe is the driving force behind the improvement in depth throughout our year levels. The inclusion of a private lesson as well as the two sessions per week I hope is evident in all who see these students play who are part of the programs here offered at Marist Tennis Centre.
