Science Week

Last week we celebrated Science Week. The students at each level completed various experiments. There was lots of learning and the students were totally engaged. It was great fun! The teachers even became scientists for a day!
How many different types of scientists can you see in the photo?
Our preps saw how the colours of lollies spread in a plate of water, and learnt about chemical reactions when their apple volcano exploded! They learnt to make predictions about what they thought would happen.
Miss Loft conducted a special experiment with the Year Ones, making lemon volcanoes! First, everyone predicted what would happen and by adding bi-carb soda, food colouring and dishwashing soap. We saw the lemons react by making foam and fizzing. It was an exciting and fun way to see a chemical reaction!
Year 2 watched primary coloured water travel through paper towels from one cup to another, creating a rainbow before their eyes!
Year 3 observed two properties of water in action- diffusion and surface tension.
When lollies are placed in water, their colour is dissolved and diffused in to the water, creating a pattern resembling a colour wheel.
Surface tension allows a whiteboard marker drawing to float and move across the surface of water!
4 O'Toole made ferris wheels out of wooden popsicle sticks
Year 5s drew little whiteboard marker friends and watched as they moved and wiggled on the surface of the water!
Year 6 students were challenged to construct a tower using only 20 sticks of spaghetti, 1 metre of string and 1 metre of tape, that was strong enough to hold a marshmallow on the top, in 18 minutes. Students used the principles of STEM to design their own towers and practised their teamwork skills.
In 6 Hall only two groups out of six were successful, but the students enjoyed the challenge nonetheless.
6 Hall also performed a chemistry experiment exploring the relationship between bicarbonate soda and white vinegar, by attempting to inflate a balloon using a plastic bottle. The students were all successful in doing this and were amazed by the result of the chemical reaction. Science Week was so much fun!
