David's Message

Dear Sunny Heights Community,

What an amazing Science week we have had! We had a visit from Kim and Jakobi at the Botanic Gardens, looking for wonder in our environment through magnifying glasses, as well as thinking about how nature has inspired human designs. Dr Megan O'Shea, from Victoria University, worked with our grade 5/6 students on some citizen science, pricking out seedlings of local wildflowers that will improve the biodiversity of grasslands near St Albans. We also had Brimbank Council planting with our grade 2s and 4s, while our 3/4 students explored the Volcano Dreaming Panorama currently set up in the library. As is often the case, the grade 2 incursion Wildlife Xposure has been pushed back due to illness, so there will be a few follow up events over the coming weeks.

We have to congratulate Mr Elliot for his amazing success at the EduTech conference last week. Elliot and I both took part in the FUSE cup Mario Kart playoffs with the top prize  a Nintendo Switch for the winning school and entry into the student FUSE cup for 2023. We managed to beat all the other schools who entered, with Elliot placing first and myself in second. As well as our medals, Elliot brought home a trophy and soon we will be setting up the Switch and getting some students ready for the 2023 competition. Miss Jasmine was also a winner, bringing back an Apple TV after showing she had the fastest fingers and winning at the Jamf stall. All four of us who went, including Miss Hill, had a great time and we will soon be seeing some opportunities for using a 3D printer and software thanks to the learning that took place.

Next week is book week. This is an amazing opportunity to celebrate literacy and literature, and to connect with the theme of 'Dreaming with my Eyes Open'. Don't forget to get your fancy dress ready for Wednesday for our book week parade, Tuesday is a curriculum day and Friday will have the coffee van and Younger Sun Bookstore here so you can grab a coffee and buy a book for your child. Friday is also wear it purple day, please see information about this on the other page.

All the best,

David and the Sunny Heights Team
