Term 3, 2022

This Term…

 

We hope you had a relaxing break and are feeling refreshed and ready for an exciting term. This term we continue our Unit of Inquiry investigations into ‘Where we are in place and time’, followed by ‘How we express ourselves’. Finally,  we’ll begin ‘How we organise ourselves’ towards the end of the term. Students will be participating in our House Athletics Carnival, Book Week, Student Led Conferences and Bike Ed. We also look forward to enjoying the Sandringham Secondary College production of ‘The Addams Family’.

 

Literacy

Writing

During our Writers Workshop and Daily 5 Work on Writing sessions, students will be learning more about the different ways they can organise their writing through experimentation with different genres structures. They will be improving their ability to use complex sentences and add detail in their writing. 

 

Reading

We are making progress with reading strategies using the CAFÉ reading comprehension framework this term. 

  • Students will continue to develop their ability to: identify implied meaning when reading; will use the skill of finding the main idea to summarise texts; determine between fact and opinion and bias and prejudice to deepen their comprehension of texts; and will be asking questions throughout the reading process to clarify their understanding. 
  • We will be reading mentor texts to assist with the development of writing skills.
  • Students will be using texts related to the Units of Inquiry to locate information.

Spelling

SMART Spelling approach to spelling as well as Unit of Inquiry specific vocabulary.

 

Numeracy

Number and Algebra

Problem solving, fractions, decimals, percentages and applying the four processes.

 

Measurement and Geometry

Units of measurement, location and transformation and scaled drawings. 

 

Statistics and Probability

Collecting, analysing and interpreting data.

Speaking & Listening

This term we are focusing on:

  • Listening carefully and with respect when teachers and other students are speaking.
  • Interacting with other students when collaborating ideas in Inquiry.

Wellbeing

This term we begin working in small focus groups to address the wellbeing themes of self-esteem, identity of self, inclusion and equality, social skills and conflict resolution.  We continue to work through the Resilience Project lessons to build gratitude, empathy and mindfulness, along with a focus on respectful relationships.
