Tutoring at McClelland

Many parents and carers will have received a letter in the mail letting them know that their child has qualified for the Tutor Learning Initiative. Below are some Q&A to shed more light on the program.

What is the Tutor Learning Initiative?

The Tutor Learning Initiative (TLI) is additional targeted learning support that McClelland College will be providing to hundreds of students this year. This additional support is available through the Victorian Government’s $250 million investment in the Tutor Learning Initiative, which supports schools to address disruptions to students’ learning as a result ofCOVID-19.

What will tutoring look like?

For Year 7- 9 students tutoring will occur once a week for a 75 minute lesson*. There will be one tutor in the group and 6 students. The learning will focus on key Numeracy or Literacy skills, depending on what your child’s data shows is the need. The skills will support students across all learning areas, not just English and Maths. All students will have set goals to work towards. Senior Students will have the opportunity to engage in tutoring as well, and this will mostly occur on a Wednesday afternoon and on Thursdays for VCAL students. Tutoring will take place over Term 2 and Term 3.

*there is the option for all McClelland students to attend lunchtime homework support tutoring.

My child has been identified as needing tutoring. Does that mean they are behind?

Students have been selected for the tutoring program based on learning and testing growth data (not achievement data) from 2020, as well as the teacher’s judgment on whether they had made ‘expected’ growth during remote learning. Some students may be operating above the expected level, but their teacher would have expected them to be operating well above the expected level and so they have been chosen to receive tutoring. Other students may well be operating below the expected level and we are pleased to be able to resource this small group intensive tutoring to accelerate their learning.

My child hasn’t been identified as requiring tutoring. I still want them to receive extra support. What’s available?

McClelland already has a number of supports in place for students. Some of these supports include:

  • Study Space after school - The opportunity exists for students to attend study space after school Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Here they can access support with their work from teachers who volunteer their time.
  • Homework Club – lunch time homework support with a tutor or teacher (available to all interested students)
  • MYLNS support (Middle Years Literacy and Numeracy Support)
  • The LIFT program (Literacy Improvement Fast Tracked – a Year 7 reading improvement program with proven results)
  • FL@M (Flexible Learning at McClelland)
  • Hands on Learning
  • In class support – McClelland teachers follow an Explicit Instructional Model when they teach and this ensures all students are challenged and extended. Many in-class adjustments are made to support and extend students’ learning on a daily basis.

Who are the tutors?

We are very pleased to be able to offer this additional tier of support to a number of students at the College. If you have any questions about the Tutor Learning Initiative please don’t hesitate to contact Assistant Principal Kathryn Henderson, Literacy Learning Specialist Frances Italia, or Numeracy Learning Specialist Matt Dawson at the College.
