Student Reflections On The Carnival

COMMUNITY

Community - That is what our carnival is all about and that was exactly what the carnival looked and felt like. From the parents, teachers and friends working and laughing together on stalls, to the students, families and friends who enjoyed a range of activities including crafts, rides and feasting. Even a thunderous storm could not deter participants, who were not going to give up the festive atmosphere easily and took up shelter to weather the storm and stay on to enjoy the band and drinks with friends.

Miss Loh was fortunate to meet Madge, a former M.P.S student from 91 years ago! Madge shared her memories from her carnival days, very different from today.

Here are a sample of student’s reflections about the day for you to enjoy.

EXCITING MOMENTS –

3 /4 H

Cliff Hanger – Lexie

“Ahh!”, screaming, yelling, cheering! The attendant clicked the guarding seat belt down. Click! The world started spinning round and round as I got higher and higher. The ride started to get chaotic; it was dramatic.  I closed my eyes and let go. Fear overtook joy.  I quickly gripped back onto the bar. I felt like someone on a parachute or a bird soaring through the sky…

Devonshire Tea – Jacob

SPLAT! We were finishing putting the jam and cream into small containers. There was a stream coming over for tea. Yes! Our first customer. PING! We made a scone with jam and cream and a coffee with milk.  This was so exciting. Later in the day I was hungry.  I really wanted a scone, so I begged my mum for one and she said, “Yes! Of Course!” Just before it got into my mouth, my mouth started to water. IT WAS DELICIOUS!

Cliff Hanger – Brit

Zoom! We raced through the air like a rocket. The cold wind slapped across my face. I could see people down below me, and the smiles across their faces.  Food was being served so quickly I could not count and the singers on the stage tore their feelings out.

The Dodgem Cars – Jack W

Bash! Weee! I was spinning like mad. I gripped onto my wheel and got back on track. The engine roared like a lion.  I saw some cars slowing down in front of me and then… BASH! Yaaahoo! Ahhhh! I could smell the smoke, food and sweaty clothes. My spit was flying everywhere. I was so overjoyed that I spun off track.

Badge Making – Leo

As I was walking towards the stall, I could feel the excitement streaming out. As I drew, I could feel the imagination spewing all over the circular piece of paper. SPLASH, went the rain as I was still drawing.  STOMP, went the machine piecing the badge together. As I walked out of the stall, I felt like I had just accomplished a mission.

OUR FIRST CARNIVAL-PREP E

Louis

I was so excited for the carnival on Saturday! When we arrived at the carnival, I didn't know which ride to go on first. I went on the scary, dark, creepy, long haunted house, then I just ran out! After that I went to the shop that sold popcorn and I got some popcorn for myself. Then I saw Elliot and Liam and then I ran up to them. After that, we went on the Cliff Hanger. It went so high that it was the size of the school. After the Cliff Hanger, I got a snow cone. It was so delicioius.

Elliot

At the carnival, I went on the Cliff Hanger. It felt like I could fly! It was epic! I had three bags of fairy floss. I could not believe that my dad was running the carnival. The fairy floss was yummy.

Toby

At the carnival, I went on the jumping castle. I got a snow cone and a stick of fairy floss. I went on the dodgem cars with Louis.

Silvana

I went to the carnival. I came with my mum and dad and my baby brother. I went on all the rides, even the Cliff Hanger. I got a showbag! It had lollies in it.

Full of rides, delicious foods and live performances, the MPS carnival was, overall, incredible.

From a 12:00 start to the closing at 8:00pm, hundreds of people poured through the school gates and began to have the time of their lives. But the fun had just begun! There were lots of talented students waiting to perform, as well as loads of exhilarating rides and mouth-watering foods. The 2017 MPS Carnival had begun!

Electrifying rides took over as eager children waited to jump onto their favourite ride. There was the many people’s favourite, the Cliff Hanger, taking everyone up into the air and back down, nearly touching the ground, thrilling the passengers. Then, with long lines curving all the way down to the hall, was the queue for the Water Balls. So many people were waiting for their turn to step into a bubble and run along the water.  Another popular ride was the Dodgem Cars.  Hundreds of people had their go at racing around the floor and either dodging others or crashing right into the other cars. It was very entertaining and everyone enjoyed it.

A great way to sit back, but still have fun, was the job for the Chair – O – Plane. Many people lined up to experience the classic ride.

Now, at the Pony Rides, seeing a pony is incredible, but riding one? Even better! This too was at the carnival.

The Giant Slide towered above the carnival, as children sped down the colourful lanes right to the ground. This was yet another fantastic ride for many students. These fabulous rides were the heart of the carnival.

All throughout the day, the variety of delectable food was always available; ice creams, fairy floss, hot chips and popcorn! The options were endless. Lunchtime and dinner were immediately sorted. You could have pulled pork, hot dogs, and so much more. There was also a massive supply of drinks. There were soft drinks at the stalls, slushies, juices, coffee and more. When the weather got hot, snow cones and frappes were the perfect refreshment. The adults didn’t miss out on the fun either! There was Devonshire Tea, and the bar for them to relax.

The performances were spectacular! Syndal Baton Twirlers kicked the show off with their presentation. Soon after, the students at M.P.S hit the stage and caused truckloads of applause and cheers. Nrithyathia Indian Dance School showed off their culture’s amazing dance skills. Next, Aurora Calisthenics Dance College, Stonnington School of Dance and The Wild Violets. South Eastern Soo Bahk Do-Martial Arts demonstration, Elite all Stars Cheer and Dance, fitness with Janina got everyone joining in with the Zumba dancing. Then, DJ Harper played some great tunes. The finishing dance was the band: ‘Just Enough’, even getting the Vice Principal, Mrs Plumb, dancing and singing along!

So many different activities filled the day, the fun never stopped! You could make Christmas decorations, jewellery and keyrings in the hall; and outside there were sports and so much more! Watching the teachers in the dunking machine made people laugh all day. So many students succeeded in dunking their favourite teachers! Adorable, fluffy animals bounded around the animal nursery. In the haunted house, ghosts roamed and kids screamed. The special effects were amazing! At the Glam bar, kids got their nails painted and the hair sprayed with mixed colours. Soon, glitter tattoos and face paintings were all over the school. In the learning centre, kids ran to eat the mouth-watering emoji cookies. So many delicious decorations lay begging to be eaten. These were definitely some of the highlights. Scattered around the bright and busy carnival were heaps of fun and unique stalls. In the hall, you could buy an amazing variety of home made goods. There was a massive stock of donated cakes, slices and cookies up for sale, as well as spectacular, delicious jams and preserves.

The show bags were also a definite success. They included, the Nerds Show Bag, The Bertie Beetle, Whiz Kid, Inflatable Show Bag, Science Show Bag, Miss Behaving and others. Also in the hall, were the second hand books and DVDs. These items sold well and many people found their ideal book. Others stalls included plants and not forgetting the popular plaster cast.

During all these amazing rides and shows, the weather suddenly stopped the fun. About five hours into the carnival, the boiling hot weather changed into nothing but rain and storms. Thunder and lightning slashed through the sky. The rides and stalls held on for as long as they could, but many had to close. Finally, after a long hour, the cold merciless rain slowed and the carnival was able to start up again. The rain did not stop us!

Because MPS’s 2017 carnival was so fantastic, we even had a huge raffle. First prize was a Tassie escape, valued at $1500. Second prize was a Daylesford getaway at $1000. The third prize was a Caulfield raceday experience valued at $750.

There were three other prizes. The winners were 1st Rita Davis, 2nd Lou Cooper, 3rd Sandra Maxfield, 4th Bruce Cooke, 5th Thu Ha and 6th Divya. Thank you to all the sponsors who donated these incredible prizes.

Overall, the MPS carnival was fantastic, through all the ups and downs. We sold many beverages and toys as well as second hand books. This carnival ended with a peaceful lantern parade. We would like to say thank you to: Ray White, Eclipse, Telstra, Britax, Sable and Pepicelli, Brimlea Aged Care and all of our other sponsors. We would also like to congratulate the raffle winners. Thank you everyone for coming, it was one of the best carnivals yet!
