It Starts with Us. Umpire in 2021

Hello parents and students of St. Augustine’s College,

The Goulburn Valley AFL Umpires Association is looking to contact students or other family members who are interested in becoming a football umpire. Umpires usually start as a boundary and may progress to becoming a goal or central umpire. The majority of games are played on a Saturday afternoon and you would be involved in the Kyabram and District, Murray and GV football leagues. Where you live and your ability will greatly influence the games you are allocated.

The Kyabram based umpires have begun training on a Tuesday and Thursday (usually at the Kyabram Recreation Reserve starting at 6.00pm). It is expected that participants will attend at least one training session per week. We initially place more emphasis on teaching the skills required to perform the boundary umpires role. Fitness is something that develops as the year progresses.

The physical effort of throwing the ball into play correctly does require moderate skill and strength, so it is usual that recruits are in at least year 7, but we do evaluate each person on their individual ability. It is not uncommon for a Years 5 or 6 student to attend training for a year just so that they learn the skills and are then ready to begin games the following season. Boundary umpires are paid between $50 to $90 per game depending on the league umpired.

It Starts With US.

Footy doesn’t start under the bright lights of Friday night footy, the Brownlow medal count or the last Saturday in September.

It starts with the first pre-season training session at the local ground, putting the cones out and hitting the hills and drills to get in shape.

It doesn’t start on the hallowed turf of the ‘G. It starts when you walk off the ground, adrenaline pumping after a thrilling finish.

From the first bounce to the final siren, there’s a buzz and an atmosphere that can’t be recreated anywhere else.

It starts with the volunteers. That undeniable smell of a bbq as you grab the footy record and walk into the local ground. The family cheer squad. The cars lining the boundary, tooting their horns and cheering every game on the day.

It starts with you. The umpires. There’d be no footy without you. From the first bounce on a dusty paddock, or a whistle blowing over the sounds of the raffle being drawn. The thrill of the call, the pace of the game.

That’s when footy’s back.

The memories, the mates, the passion, the respect.

It starts with you. It starts with us, but it all starts with footy.

Get fit. Get paid. Have fun. If you haven't already renewed to umpire in 2021, click here to continue your umpiring journey!
