We acknowledge the Wadawurrung People as the Traditional Owners of this land along with their continuing connection to land, waters and Culture.

We pay our respect to their Ancestors and Elders past, present and emerging.

At Beaufort Secondary College we aim to create a safe, supportive and productive learning environment in which all students can reach their full potential. Over the past few weeks, I have worked with our Year 7 students and their teachers to develop an understanding of how we would like our classes to operate. Together we created a ‘Y Chart’ which clearly describes how we want our classes to look, sound and feel like in order for us all to be able to work and learn together. The process is underpinned by two basic rights for our students: the right to feel safe at school and the right to learn at school.

We also discussed a set of steps and consequences that can be put in place should anyone decide to stray from the accepted behaviours and actions, according to our ‘Y Chart’. All of our Year 7 students agreed that the ‘Y Chart’ and the ‘Steps’ were appropriate for their classes and provide a framework for all to use to ensure they maintain a positive classroom culture.

Our student diaries have a copy of our classroom culture and the expectations for all of our students, as well as information about our focus areas: Respectful Relationships, High Expectations and Excellence. We strive to achieve these on a daily basis in our school.

These expectations have been particularly evident in the way in which our classrooms have been working over the start of this year. Congratulations to our students and staff for all of their productive work and for establishing such a positive school climate.

House Swimming Sports

Our House Swimming Sports were held on Thursday February 11th with good weather for the event. Congratulations to all of our Age Champions and well done to all of the students who participated on the day, particularly those who are not avid swimmers, yet were prepared to get in and ‘have a go’. A highlight was seeing all three of the Peacock siblings, Jack, Ben and Lily, receiving Age Champion in their respective categories – a significant family achievement! The day went very well – thank you to our new Sports Coordinator, Mr Anthony Tatchell, for organising the event – a huge effort – particularly given he has only been in our school since the beginning of the year. I know he appreciated the support from the rest of the staff who helped out on the day to bring it all together – a team effort! Thanks also to YMCA for the preparation of the pool and grounds, as well as supplying life guards. Thanks to Friends of the Pool for the BBQ and drinks. We also appreciated the presence of parents, grandparents, friends and community members who came along on the day to support our young people – great to see you there!

School Council Election

This week’s newsletter contains information about the School Council Election process. Nomination forms can be accessed through the BSC website. School Councils play an important role in setting the directions of the school within central guidelines. However, Beaufort Secondary College Council meetings are traditionally informal, positive and informative.

I encourage parents to seriously consider standing for School Council. An information sheet for parents is provided, along with a Schedule 5A form to be used if you wish to nominate yourself, whilst the Schedule 5B form is used to nominate another parent (with his or her agreement). If you have any queries, please don’t hesitate to contact me at school.
