What a fantastic start to the school year Term 1 has been! Our students hit the ground running in preparation for the Twilight Sports that was held in early March. For the first 6 weeks of PE lessons, students practiced the events of sprints, high jump, fitness frenzy, hurdles, relays, bean bag drop, frog jumps and vortex throws. This was my first time running an event of this calibre and I was astounded by the support of all involved on the night. Thank you to all the families that attended. The students ran so fast, jumped so high and threw so far in such a vibrant demonstration of their athletic capabilities. Above all, I have never felt more pride for my students than witnessing the support and encouragement they showed their peers, regardless of what House they were in. It was a true testament of their kindness, friendliness and respect.
After the Twilight Sports, students spent the remainder of their PE lessons involved in fun and engaging activities. The MLC and JLC students participated in minor games, such as Cats and Dogs, Number Soccer and Rats and Rabbits. These games were a fantastic opportunity for our students to develop their movement sequences and use strategies in game play. In addition to this, minor games allow the students to demonstrate their teamwork and leadership skills as they worked cooperatively with their peers.
Meanwhile our Prep and JLC students participated in a number of activities focusing on developing their spatial awareness, throwing and catching and the fundamental movement skills of running, jumping, hopping, skipping, leaping, and sidestepping. Our PE lessons also had a strong focus on developing the interpersonal skills of the students, as social navigation is fundamental to success in many sports.
As a new PE teacher at St. Bridget’s, I have felt so warmly welcomed into the school community by all our students, teachers and families. It says so much about the wonderful values that are upheld at St. Bridget’s. I am very grateful to have this opportunity to teach at this school, it has been an absolute privilege getting to know the students inside and outside of the PE environment. I could not speak more highly about the enthusiasm and passion that they give to all that they do. I wish all of our families a safe Easter break and I look forward to what the remainder of the year has in store for us.
