Easter Hat Parade

As mentioned via News Feed, we will be celebrating Term 1 with an Easter Hat Parade on the final day of school (Thursday 1st April). All students from Prep to Grade 6 are encouraged to participate by making or decorating a hat to model during the parade. These hats must be made at home. We have included pictures of some examples for inspiration. We encourage you to use recycled items wherever possible. Your support is greatly appreciated.

At the Parade, there will be a raffle drawn by Family and Friends. Please check out the Family and Friends page of this newsletter for information about how to donate to the raffle and purchase tickets.

Issues of Consent and Gender Equality

You may have seen in the news the coverage that schools receive around issues of consent, sexual assault, and gender inequality.  Our school, in partnership with parents, has an important role to play in addressing this significant social issue; even at a Primary School level. Habits and attitudes formed early have a big effect on adolescents who enter secondary school with pre-conceived ideas.

We stand against gendered violence. The testimonies provided by current and former school students across the country reinforce the need to support students to build and manage safe and respectful relationships.

We teach two x 30 minute sessions per week in every class of a program called Circle Solutions. During this time, we speak (age appropriately) of fairness, gender and social understanding. We teach elements of a program rolled out across the state called Respectful Relationships. Respectful Relationships is a whole school approach that supports our school to embed a culture of respect and gender equality across our entire school community.

We also teach respectful relationships education as part of the Victorian Curriculum, which focuses on building students’ social and emotional skills by supporting them to recognise and regulate emotions, develop empathy for others and build and manage safe and respectful relationships (including understanding consent). In the older years, our school provides sexuality education as part of the Health and Physical Education curriculum.

Our school takes sexual assault allegations very seriously. We respond to any disclosures in an appropriate and supportive manner. Any allegations are acted upon quickly by following our procedures for responding to allegations of abuse and assault. We report allegations of sexual assault to Victoria Police, and Child Protection and the Department of Education and Training as required.

We will provide support to any students who are victim-survivors of sexual assault. Students can receive support from the school’s wellbeing supports, for example the Student Wellbeing Coordinator and Student Support Services Officers whom we meet with regularly.

If you have any questions or concerns, or wish to discuss something that has happened, please contact our Student Wellbeing Coordinator, Mr Matt Woolard by phoning the school telephone number.

As a parent or carer, if you or someone you know is impacted by sexual assault and needs support, please contact 1800 RESPECT on 1800 737 732 or visit www.1800RESPECT.org.au
