GEKA as an Employer of Choice

Yan Li, Early Childhood Teacher

I began working with GEKA as a casual relief teacher in 2020. The main reason I wanted to work for GEKA is because GEKA is not only committed to maximising outcomes for children and encouraging opportunities for families to be involved in their child’s early education, but also it is committed to promote pedagogical and career support.

After a year work with GEKA, I am on the same page as GEKA's philosophy, regarding to early childhood education, so I decided to join in GEKA team with no doubts!

GEKA offered professional learning opportunities in the initial year including Yarning Circles, about indigenous culture, that inspires me to implement into program.

This year I began working at GEKA Brady Road Kindergarten as a kindergarten teacher from term one. I have not worked here before, so the environment is brand new to me, which makes me feel excited but also pressured for uncertainties.

In the first set-up day, I was so glad to meet the other educators. All team members were supportive as they showed me around the service and answered questions I might have had when I started on my first day. Even though we might have different views at work, all team members have open communication that really supports our team and makes me feel connected to the group.

After the first team meeting, we developed and agreed on shared goals for our team and for the curriculum, which promotes team connection and group decision-making that includes everyone in the group. In our team, we believe that we respect each one’s contribution, and work towards the shared goal that benefits families and children as a priority. I am glad to have supportive and professional team members to work alongside. We are going to support each other as recognise our differences in ways that will help us to understand different perspectives.

We value positive relationships between the children, their families, and the educators, and the wider community as a whole. It is a welcoming environment where everyone is respected and valued for who they are.
