Food Growing and Science

Tropical Fruit World

Macadamia cracking
Macadamia cracking

On Tuesday the 2nd of March, the whole school went on an excursion to Tropical Fruit World at Duranbah. This was a Science based excursion, as we are looking at food and food production as part of our Science unit this term. We went on a tractor ride through their extensive fruit growing area and saw a range of unusual fruit.

After a banana and macadamia cracking stop, we went on a boat trip to a play area. After lunch we tasted some locally grown fruit. The children were very receptive to the learning opportunities and their behaviour was outstanding.

Geography Day

On Monday, 1st of March we held Geography Day. We started the day by looking at Australia’s Foreign Aid and moved onto our neighbours in the local area. The children then worked in groups to learn about other countries such as Indonesia, New Zealand, Malaysia and Papua New Guinea. They planned a trip to the country, learning about prices for flights (some Business class!) and researched areas such as population, the flag, currency and capital cities. We also listened to some rather stirring renditions of National Anthems! This is an ongoing project and we hope to continue it in Term Two.

Library Borrowing

With the support of the P & C (Parents and Citizens Association) we have moved Library Borrowing from class time to each Thursday lunchtime. This allows the children more time to browse and teachers more time in class for other curriculum areas. We have also allocated time on Fridays for class borrowing (books that stay in the classroom). Donna has kindly offered to help out with the borrowing and returning. Please ensure that your child has some kind of protective bag for any books they borrow or contact Gaye in the office to get one from the school for free.
