Foundation and Year 1

Each day children arrive they have been encouraged to place their drawing of themselves on the ’Feeling Charts’. We have used this in Inquiry, and in Maths sessions during our topic on Data. After reading ‘Whose Shoes’, we also collected data/information on all the different types of shoes in our room. Children took their shoes off and we discovered by sorting shoes in different groups it is so much easier to discuss our discoveries. We also discovered we prefer our shoes on: it smells better! We are getting better at recognising our three new letters (s, t, and m) and the sounds they make, along with putting numbers in order from the smallest to largest.

Year 1/2

Some of us have been learning the rule about when to double the letter at the end of a word…

“If a word is short and the vowel is short

Double the end , don’t get caught” eg. Fluff, doll

We are also spending time improving our letter formation and handwriting.

In Maths we are looking at ‘Chance”. We have discussed what would be an event that was ‘likely, ‘unlikely’, ‘certain’ or ‘impossible’ to happen.

Year 12 Camp:

Last week, the entire Year 12 cohort travelled down to Ocean Grove for a three-day Leadership Camp.

What follows is an account written by Macey Jacques:

Year 12 Camp 2021

Bags upon bags, the year 12 students headed off to Ocean Grove for their last and final school camp. For some, a sigh of relief that school is one step closer to being done, and for others the saddening realisation that this 13-year journey is slowly ending. All year 12 students piled in and the travel begun. And what is a school camp without some roadworks? Arriving in Ocean Grove, all students got comfortable in their cabins, before the toughest cook off in existence. A three course ‘MasterChef challenge ‘took place with each cabin being critically judged by non-other than celebrity judges Mr. Lockhart and Mr. Forrest. This challenge brought many students laughter and joy and for some a sense of success in creating some of the best food the judges had ever seen and eaten. Hearing the judges’ overall critiques of each cabin and completing some activities was completed, before all piling back into the bus and cars and heading down to the beach for a night-time stroll. The sound of the waves crashing onto the shore was a relaxing sound for many students. We all headed back and cozied up in our cabin groups before going to bed.

Day two was the day everyone had been looking forward to. An early rise, for a brisk 3.5-kilometre sunrise walk definitely woke everyone up. We all got ready and headed off to Anglesea for a new learning activity for most, paddle boarding. Although the weather was cold and made many rethink actually getting in the water, everyone gave it a red hot go. This was an experience that none will forget. An activity, that although was completed separately, was also highly dependent on teamwork. From the bashing into each other with boards, to gravity and balance not helping you out, everyone thoroughly enjoyed this activity. After lunch we all headed back to Ocean Grove where we had a chance to relax and take a break, a chance for shopping, being with friends and bonding. After an exhausting but amazing day we all went to bed at a reasonable time.

The last day started with another brisk walk along the beach and last chance for some beach and ocean photos. Loading up again and hitting the road for home. A quick stop in Geelong for a shopping break in Westfield shopping complex before the long-haul home. This camp helped bring our year 12s closer as a group and provided a chance of relaxation before the heat of this year arrives. All students had a blast and we would like to thank Mrs. Woodman, Mrs. Barker and Mr. Gretgrix for driving us around, caring for us and taking time out of your life to come along with us on this adventure. Another big thank you to Mr. Lockhart and Mr. Forrest for coming along with us in the first day and trying every single dish, even if you knew you could not fit it in. This is a memory all of year 12 will carry and cherish.

Communications: We would like to remind all senior students that they are expected to log on to Compass each school day and check their school based Gmail account for any correspondence from staff. All official communication will be through these channels and these places should be checked daily.

If you are unable to attend a scheduled class, WebEx or will be absent from an event, please notify your teacher by email as a matter of courtesy. It is also common courtesy to acknowledge emails received from teachers. We need to know you have received any communication we send.

All students in Year 11 and 12 need to remember that your learning is your responsibility. By this stage of the term you should be in the routine of checking your emails daily and using your diary as a viable resource.

Year 12 Deb Ball:

Last minute dress fittings, makeup trials and final dance classes are happening as we all prepare for the long- awaited deb ball, held over from last year. Excitement and nerves are definitely in the air as we get ready for next Friday night.

Taking care of yourself:

We are moving into the cooler weather period and so need to take extra special care of ourselves. Make sure you are finding the balance that you need to meet your school commitments, but still have a social life as well as meet the commitments you have outside of school – family, sport, employment etc. You need to be getting proper sleep, so turn off the devices that tend to rule our lives. Listen to soft music or read a novel as your wind down at the end of a day. Eat properly and exercise regularly. Keep up your vitamin C – fresh citrus is your best friend at this time of year.

Lead by Example:

Being in Year 11 and 12 means that you are now the leaders at school. Younger students are looking at you as the example of what to do, so make sure you are doing the right thing. Be in full school uniform, make sure hats aren’t worn during class time. Get to class on time and have the right materials. If homework has been set, or a task has been given, make sure it is done. Don’t come to class armed with excuses. In the end you are only letting yourself down.

We have a very clear SWPBS Matrix to follow at Wedderburn College. Be the Ambassadors and carry its focus with you at all times.
