From the Principal

Dear Parents, Guardians, Students, Staff and Friends of St Norbert College,

"They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;

Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.

At the going down of the sun and in the morning

We will remember them."

This stanza of the poem For the Fallen, written by Laurence Binyon in the early days of World War One, has become a common and much used Ode as part of ANZAC services across Australia, New Zealand and many other parts of the world. Soon after our return from the holidays, our College gathered to commemorate and to reflect uponthe legacy of the ANZACs at our annual ANZAC assembly.

It was another ceremony of great reverence and respect shown by staff and students alike, for which we are very proud. In the Principal’s address following this service, I also alluded to the wonderful example set by our students Emma Pickering (Year 8) and Oscar McDonald (Year 12), who represented our College at the annual City of Canning ANZAC Day service on Thursday 25th April. Excerpts from the speeches presented by Oscar and Emma on behalf of students of our College and in our region, have been included in our newsletter for you to read and I highly recommend them to all.

As Oscar shared, “Legacies only die if people forget them” and it is incumbent on all of us to remember the sacrifices made, by generations past and present, in developing a positive future for all in our local, national and global communities.

The 11th of May 2019 marks a legacy of a different kind. On this date this year, we acknowledge and celebrate the 60th anniversary of the arrival in Fremantle of Fr Peter O’Reilly and Fr John Reynolds, our ‘Founding Fathers’. Fr O’Reilly and Fr John were later joined in September by Fr Stephen Cooney and together they set about securing the Norbertine future in Western Australia and most prominently now, a vibrant, relevant and esteemed Christ-centred educational community called St Norbert College.

And whilst today is the day we acknowledge our ‘Founding Fathers’, it would be remiss of me not to wish our mothers, grandmothers, aunties and motherly guardians, a happy, rewarding and richly deserved, Mothers’ Day on Sunday. May we especially think of all of those times when the words, actions and unconditional love of our mothers, made all the difference.

“Mary, Mother of God, pray for all mothers”

God bless.

Mr S Harvey (Principal)

City of Canning ANZAC Day Service

Please see the attached speech made by  Emma Pickering and Oscar McDonald at the City of Canning ANZAC Day service on Thursday 25 April 2019. Emma and Oscar were invited to address the gathering and did so with such aplomb, resulting in numerous messages of congratulations. Their words of wisdom and maturity are a great message for us all.

Welcome to St Norbert College

We are very excited to welcome two new staff members to our College;

Mrs Bronwyn Pescud has recently joined us to assist us as an interim step as a College Psychologist. Mrs Pescud will be with us for two days per week for Term 2 as we work through a process of appointment following the departure of Mrs Carvalho. Mrs Pescud'S substantive role during the week is as a member of the Psychology Team at Catholic Education Western Australia.

Mrs Lisa Quartermain will commence working with us shortly in the role of Community Relations and Marketing Officer, following the departure of Mr Matthew Biddle to the Eastern States. Mrs Quartermain joins us after a distinguished journalism career around the globe, most recently in the education sector at Seven West Media here in Perth.

We are blessed to have Mrs Pescud and Mrs Quartermain joining our St Norbert College community and look forward to many wonderful interactions with them both in the future.
