Griffith District Cup

On Friday 22nd September, Marian competed in The Griffith District Cup against Wade High School. The Griffith District Cup is a local competition for year 7 students to represent their respective schools in soccer.

Marian conducted selection trials to form a final squad of 16 players for both the girls and boy’s soccer teams. These trials were very competitive, and I would like to congratulate all students who trialed.

On the day, the Marian Year 7 Girls side competed first with a 10.30 am kick off. From the start of the game, it was clear that Marian was going to dominate with very strong midfield in Claudia Torresan and Maria Vitucci controlling the game and attacking Wade’s goal at every opportunity.

These players were well supported by Sofia Cirillo, Jessica Agostini, Jaime Martinello and Antoinette Galluzzo who held a strong defensive line despite a number of attacking raids from Wade’s very quick striker. In attack Marian had a number of students with strong scoring opportunities, with the following girls scoring a number of goals for the side; Maria Vitucci, Claudia Torresan, Pria Cerato, Aryellah Dal Broi, and Zana Raccanello.

The game finished with a score of 13 nil. With their coach Mel Foschi feeling optimistic of the future of soccer at Marian in Bill Turner Trophy 2018 competition. Well done girls.

The boys were then set to play at 1 pm against a very physically big and fast side. The boys fort hard, especially in the first quarter of the game, receiving two penalties early. Wade's keeper was exceptional during the whole game and saved the first of the well struck penalties, however, the second was too well placed – putting Marian up 1 nil in the first quarter.

Marian continued its strong performance in its midfield with Christopher Zappala, Pasquale Agresta and Antonio De Marco playing well. They were well supported by Brian Flores, Domenic Sergi and Ryan Zanatta up front.

Marian’s back line really proved to be the difference, frustrating Wade’s attack and turned defence into their own attack with strong runs from Ethan Donetto and Damon Reginato. Whilst James Cheers and Zac Dal Broi supported by Dean Poloni held Wade to nil.

Marian really controlled to game well with a number of strong shots on goal saved by their keeper. They finished the game with a strong 3 nil win. Well done boys

Berg Shield 2017

On Monday the Berg Shield cricket team travelled to Leeton to take on St. Francis in the statewide knockout competition. The team started slowly with the ball, with a couple of missed opportunities St.Francis reached 1/69 at the drinks break. With a short distance to the ropes the boundaries continued to flow after the break as one St. Francis opener reaching fifty. He was out soon after by James Roach 1/31 with the persistent Marian bowling managing to restrict Leeton to 5/168 from their 30 overs. Abhiyash Sandhu was the pick of the bowlers with 2/18.

In reply Nate McGregor and Ryan Bock managed to see off the openers before Nate was removed which brought Aditha Jayasuriya to the crease. Together with Bock they managed to chip away at the large total before Bock (20 runs) was removed. Isaac Testoni entered and got off the mark with a lusty blow for six. These two pushed the score toward the hundred mark but when Testoni (39) and Jayasuriya (24) fell in quick successions there was little resilience from the tail as Kolby Seers (10) the only other batsman to reach double figures. Marian managed to bat out the 30 overs reaching a score of 9/126.
