Secondary Sports Report

What a Year so Far!

2018 has once again been a busy year for sport at Moama Anglican Grammar. Along with the school carnivals, BISSA sporting activities and CIS representation, our school has participated in Football competitions for both boys and girls, were represented at the North West Zone School Shoot for the first time and will be attending Netball competitions later this year.

Our students were a credit to our school at this meet by not only performing the best they could, but supporting each other well and representing our school in a positive manner.

There were a number of students who were very close to receiving a ribbon and many students who swam faster than they did in qualifying for BISSA. A couple of the first place performances were Bernard Uys (17-19 age group) - 50m Breaststroke with a time of 36.88sec, and the 14 Year Old Girls Freestyle Relay Team (Tahlia O’Neill, Maia Uys, Emma Weiner and Tilli-Rose Peters) with a time of 2:14:48, which was a clear 5 seconds ahead of second place.

Tahlia O'Neill (Year 8), Ashleigh O'Neill (Year 9), & Chloe Brown (Year 7) all competed at CIS Swimming in Sydney. They all swam well at this meet, attaining PBs in all their events, amongst a very competitive field.

Combined Independent Schools (CIS) Events

NSW All Schools 15 Years and under AFL Championship

Olivia Taranto, Georgie Gough, Jayda Richardson, Charlotte McGillivray and Anthony DePasquale were all selected on the Combined Independent Schools (CIS) Team to play in the NSW All Schools AFL Championship competition.

The girls team played well and showed that as a regional team they were getting stronger than previous years. They placed third out of the day. The boys team showed great strength and won the competition.

Following the competitions Jayda Richardson and Anthony DePasquale, both from year 9, were selected in the NSW All Schools team and will be attending training camp in Canberra and the SSA Secondary 15 Years & Under AFL Championships in Adelaide in July. Congratulations to both these students and good luck at the next competition.

CIS Netball

April Eeles, Poppy Palmer, Jayda Richardson (15 and Under Team); Claudia Mawson (Open Team); and coach Mrs Anna Palmer, have been selected to represent RAS (Riverina Associated Schools) at the CIS Netball competition in August, following trials in Albury which 12 Moama Anglican Grammar girls attended.

Other Sporting Events

North West School Zone Shoot

Our first Moama Anglican Grammar team to enter a Field and Game Shooting Competition competed at the North West School Shoot this year. The team was comprised of Thomas Cox, Finlay Chivers, Harper Molluso, Leyton Shenfield & Nicholas Cox, with Nicholas Cox placing 2nd in the junior category.

AFL 15 & Under Girls Giants Cup competition

Our 15 and under girls footy team coached by Miss Leah Thompson played in a competition in Deniliquin against Deniliquin High School, Finley High School, Barham High School and Hay High School. They won all three games with scores of 31 - 6, 14 -6 and 19 - 6. This meant the girls won the competition and progressed to play at the NSW/ACT State Championships in Canberra. Here the girls put up a strong fight and scored some great goals, but unfortunately were against teams stronger than them resulting in losses in all three games. The girls all enjoyed the experience and showed great sportsmanship and team work throughout the competition.

Sun Country Cup Football

The Sun Country Cup is a Senior Boys Football competition played early in the season against Echuca College, St Joseph’s College and Rochester Secondary College. The boys, coached by Mr Greg Cadd, put on a great performance and for the first time in the history of our school we defeated Rochester Secondary and finished equal top with two wins.  Unfortunately the boys missed out on going to the next level on percentage.
