LEARNING MATTERS

YEAR 7 MATHS PATHWAY

This year McKinnon is implementing an innovative new Year 7 program called “Maths Pathway”. In a typical Year 7 Mathematics class there is an average eight year spread of ability. The Maths Pathway model helps to manage this spread of mathematical ability by moving from a one-size-fits-all maths program, to a fully differentiated and individualised program for each student. In the Maths Pathway program each student will learn maths based on their individual mathematical ability. The program shifts the focus away from grades, and instead places a focus on each student’s level of improvement, allowing all students the opportunity to succeed.

In their first Mathematics lesson, students eagerly began their journey by exploring the online program (which replaces the traditional textbook), as well as completing an adaptive quiz designed to determine their point of knowledge for all Mathematical content areas. Maths Pathway lessons will consist of online modules, completing work in exercise books, group learning, regular testing, and activities based on real life application of Mathematics. Students will also undertake personal reflection and goal setting, and will receive individual teacher feedback designed to help each student progress throughout the year. Year 7 parents will be provided with more information on the Maths Pathway program in the coming weeks.
