Yarrabah 2018

By Jade Wilson
My name is Jade, and I went on the 2018 Yarrabah trip with a group of students from McClelland College and Elisabeth Murdoch College. Travelling to Yarrabah was a once-in-a-lifetime experience that I will never forget. We were given opportunities to form friendships, step out of our comfort zones, and learn valuable lessons about the privileged lives we live.
Visiting the Yarrabah Primary School and the Police Citizens Youth Centre to help and play with the children is an eye-opening experience, that reveals the impact technology has on our lives and what we miss out on. The kids were all incredibly friendly and inclusive, they taught us new games, such as Elastics, and told us all about their home lives and families.
Venturing to places such as Josephine Falls, Green Island and the crocodile farm gave us the chance to try new and exciting things. We jumped from massive boulders into water holes, snorkelled with turtles on the Great Barrier Reef and ate crocodile skewers! We created new memories with our group of supportive peers and the trip changed something in each of us - before we knew it, we were giving everything a go.
The Yarrabah trip allows you to immerse yourself in Aboriginal culture. From viewing Aboriginal art and history to throwing spears and boomerangs. You¹ll experience it all, and return home with an unlocked and wholesome mindset.
My favourite part of the trip, was undergoing all of the above with my new friends from EMC. The amazing bond all of the students had built made the entire journey all the more fulfilling.
I highly recommend taking part in the next Yarrabah trip, it is an adventure I will treasure for the rest of my life.
