Principal’s Message

NAPLAN

All students in Years 3 and 5 received their individual NAPLAN Reports last week. I am sure that this was a great opportunity for families to share the reports and celebrate successes and commitment to learning. A preliminary analysis of the whole school NAPLAN data has shown the following:

Year 3:

The Year 3 results are quite exceptional in all areas. All staff who have taught these students over the years should feel a sense of pride in the achievements of the group in all areas tested.

Within the Year 3 group some students were able to ‘ace’ all or some of the tests.

Year 5:

Reading results were very good and similar to previous years.

Writing results were very good and improved over the previous year.

Spelling results were very good and similar to previous years.

Grammar and Punctuation were very good but slightly down on last year.

Numeracy results were very good and improved over the previous year.

Of note was that the school Comparison Report showed very steady growth by the students from Year 3 to Year 5. 80% of students in Year 5 were at Mount View in Year 3. This is the Matched Cohort. Of these students a very high proportion showed moderate growth – this is very good. A significant number of students showed high growth – this is excellent.

NAPLAN Relative Growth Analysis – Year 5 Students 2019

A way to measure the relative effectiveness of a school’s educational program is to examine the Relative Growth Data derived from NAPLAN for a group of students. In this analysis the Year 5 students at Mount View form two identifiable groups. The first group is the Matched Cohort, the 80% or so of students who completed the Year 3 NAPLAN at Mount View two years ago. The second group is the Unmatched Cohort, the 20% or so of students who were newly enrolled at Mount View within the last two years. The tables below display the mean scaled scores, in each of the learning areas tested, of the two groups: Matched Cohort and Unmatched Cohort.

The NAPLAN scale maps student outcomes onto a ten band continuum. The individual student Year 5 results are reported in Band 3 – Band 8. Parents have already received these individual reports.

Scaled Scores

Scaled scores provide an ability measure of student outcomes. These scores range from 0 -1000, and form the numeric continuum from which the ten reporting bands are derived. The bands line up against the scaled scores as follows;

Band 1 - scaled scores ≤ 270 Band 6 - scaled scores > 478 and ≤ 530

Band 2 - scaled scores > 270 and ≤ 322 Band 7 - scaled scores > 530 and ≤ 582

Band 3 - scaled scores > 322 and ≤ 374 Band 8 - scaled scores > 582 and ≤ 634

Band 4 - scaled scores > 374 and ≤ 426 Band 9 - scaled scores > 634 and ≤ 686

Band 5 - scaled scores > 426 and ≤ 478 Band 10 - scaled scores > 686

Analysis

From the data sets displayed it is clear that, in all areas tested, the students who have been enrolled at Mount View for longer, on average, achieved higher scores. This is a very positive endorsement of the educational program at this school. These results have implications for the way in which teachers plan for student learning into the future. One area that may need attention is the induction and support of newly enrolled students at our school. One action the school could take is testing of each student soon after enrolment in order to accurately assess the students’ points of learning needs and from that create a differentiated approach to their learning program.

Kellie Stewart – Assistant Principal Jells Park Primary School

Congratulations to Kellie Stewart on her promotion to Assistant Principal at Jells Park. On behalf of our school I would like to sincerely thank Kellie for her dedication to Mount View over many years. We wish her every success in her career development.

‘It is with great sadness that I officially say goodbye to the Mount View primary school community. At the beginning of the year I accepted a one year contract as acting Assistant Principal at Jell Park PS. Since then my position has become permanent and although I love my new role and new school, I miss and will always cherish the many connections and friends I have made with the students and families at Mount View. I wish you all the very best and hope to reconnect again in the future.’

Staffing Appointments

Congratulations to Chris Cheverton and Frances Braithwaite on their promotion to Leading Teacher level at Mount View Primary School. Chris will take on the role of LT – Numeracy Co-ordination P-6 while Frances will take on the role of LT – Literacy Co-ordinator P-6. In addition to these promotions nine of our current teachers who were on twelve-month fixed term contracts have had their contracts extended for a further twelve months. Throughout the year I have been able to convert over ten teachers from fixed term to ongoing status at Mount View. This move towards continuity of employment provides a solid platform for continuous school improvement – a great benefit for all of our students.

Pick My Project

Phase 1 of our Pick My Project is underway. The construction of the three basketball/tennis courts will continue next week and be completed during the holidays.

Asbestos Removal

The Victorian Government initiative to remove asbestos from schools will be completed at Mount View over the school holidays. The process involves the removal of some wall cladding and the kiln in the Art Room. Suitable facilities and material will be installed in place of the materials containing asbestos. Works are scheduled for Monday, 30 September.

Student-Led Conferences

The recent Student-Led Conferences were a great success. Students from Prep to Year 6 were able to present their learning successes in the classrooms. The increased focus on Student Voice and Agency complements the improvements in Student Assessment and Reporting which have been implemented this year.

The new Litter Management Strategy at Mount View introduces two key initiatives:

All Year Levels have a designated area to maintain. This will require daily attention. Each level should work with the children on the distribution of work, whether it be a roster or continuous attention. The aim is
