S.T.E.A.M Week

What did we get up to this S.T.E.A.M week?

There was a huge variety of science, technology, engineering, art and maths inquiries explored across the school during STEAM week. Let’s see what everyone got up to…

Storytime from Space- many classes listened to stories read from REAL astronauts up in space.

Whole School open afternoon- Spheros, Solar systems, experiments, constructions, discussions and more!!! Thank you to the families who joined us to celebrate our learning!

Preps explored the concept of change, making predictions and observations through science experiments. Looking at forces and testing materials on inclined planes.

Year 1s inquired into light - investigating reflection as they undertook a range of hands-on science inquiries, made kaleidoscopes and tried to ‘bounce light’ around the room. Students continued

They were provoked by the question ‘Is the moon a reflector or a source of light?’

Year 2s explored forces in action- ‘push’ and ‘pull’ through mathematics and science focuses. For the open afternoon, students were inspired by the book ‘Rosie Revere the Engineer’ to investigate, design and create. The Year 2s held a very successful Family night, learning about Engineering by building rooftops for hippopotamuses, Coding by experimenting with spheros and Beebots and Science by inquiring into mixing.

During Science week the Year 3s learnt about solids, liquids and gases. We did lots of experiments, like Ooblek polymers, made pancakes and explored balloon rockets. It was really fun! - Colin, 3BC

In Year 4 we learnt about how the Sun, Earth and Moon work together to form the day and night cycle. Throughout the week we did fun activities to discover about how the Sun, Earth and Moon move. The most fun activity was the shadow stickman puppets we made out of pipe cleaners. We shone our torches to discover how shadows look during the day - Tayshaun and Anushka, 4JB

Year 5s undertook an inquiry into the solar system, building a scaled model to show their discoveries.

The Senior Learning centre was a hive of activity as the Year 6s continued their ‘S.T.E.A.M Tuesday’ inquiries. After being presented with a real world ‘Wind turbine’ challenge, the students went through the design process to create a simple wind turbine capable of lifting a cup of marbles off the floor.

Our Moon Landing competitions:

A great big thankyou to everyone who created a ‘moon landing device’ as part of 2019’s ‘Moon landing competitions.’

Congratulations to the seven Prep and Year 1 students who landed their paper plane ‘on the moon.’ Asser from 1FI was the lucky winner of the major prize, winning tickets to Science Works.

Year 2-6 Egg drop competition winners will be drawn at the next whole school assembly.
