Ormond's Got Talent

Over the last 2 weeks we have watched large group of students who auditioned for Ormond’s Got Talent. We saw over 30 acts ranging from Year 2 to 6 students. We really commend the students on their commitment to putting themselves in the spotlight and showing the confidence and organization in the preparation and performing of an act. Students entertained in the arts of singing, acting, dance, comedy, magic and music. We are looking forward to putting this production together to share with the school on Wednesday 7th August.

The Balanced Box - Parent Event

Using the fabulous feedback received from the school lunch order survey late last year, the education sub-committee is working towards aligning Ormond P.S. with the Education Department’s recommended nutrition guidelines.

Our first event, the Balanced Box parent forum saw our OPS parent community receive invaluable insights into building children's lunch boxes to support their growth and performance for the school day. Many thanks to Pediatric Dietitian Nicole Passov for sharing her expertise and great ideas with us. We will also hold an evening session later this year to support continued interest levels. Stay tuned.

Respectful Relationships

Following on form the Introduction to Respectful Relationships in the last newsletter, below is a summary of what the different year levels have been doing.

Year 1

The Year One’s are currently working on ‘Positive Coping’ strategies to identify ways in which they can make themselves feel better. They have learned strategies such as five finger breathing, balloon breathing, pressing hands together, counting to ten and listening to music.

“When I feel angry I can use five finger breathing to make me feel better”- Ryder

“When I feel sad I can use music to make me feel happy”- Jordan

Year 3

Year 3 recently worked on ‘Problem Solving’ strategies that they can use in situations where a solution is difficult to come by.

We created ‘problem-solving dice’ to apply to a range of scenarios where problem-solving was necessary.

“It was a fun activity because we got to write down problems that we find ourselves in and how to solve them if you were in that position” - Gigi

Year 4

Currently, Year 4 are working on ‘Positive Coping’ strategies to use in a range of different situations.

We have been working on ‘ How to give good apologies’

“I liked it because we got to be in pairs and wrote an apology letter like we were actually apologising” - Sophie A

Year 5

Currently, Year 5 are working on “Personal Coping Profiles”. They have been developing their understanding of the distinction between positive and negative coping strategies. This continues to develop all Year Five student’s social skills through participating in small group activities.

“My group had to act it out that we misheard our teacher and everyone laughed at us. Then we had to act out trying to be positive about it. It was fun and funny” - Alan

Year 6

Currently, Year 6 are working on “Problem Solving”. The students are learning to recognise which strategies to use, in order to help them deal with different scenarios they might be faced with and the effects it places on their resilience. We can strengthen our ability to deal with different situations, with practice the students have enjoyed being involved in a number of different activities to strengthen this skill. One of the activities was looking at problems students may face during their transition into high school and the skills they will use to help them during this time.

Foundation News

Wow! What a fantastic first semester of school our preps have experienced! It has been absolutely wonderful seeing how far they have come in the past six months of their first schooling year. All students have been working extremely hard in all areas of their learning at Ormond Primary.

Over the last two weeks we have had a couple of visits from the Fire Brigade, who taught the students all about how to be safe around fires and what they should do in the event of a house fire. On the last visit all students were lucky enough to have a turn with the fire hose, very exciting for all.

In Mathematics, we have been looking at friends of 10 and place value of two digit numbers. At the beginning of next term we will continue our focus on counting and introducing mass.

For the last week of this term our word of the week is CAR with the focus on the blend ‘AR’. First week back next term we will focus on the letter K and NG followed by the introduction of the blend ‘AY’.

We have had a great first semester and looking forward to an even better second semester. We will be starting our Science unit next term, where we will take a closer look at materials, forces, plants and the weather. Once again we also look forward to seeing all our students extend their knowledge in Mathematics and Literacy.

Next term will see the start of our parent helpers. If you are interested in helping with reading in the mornings please let your classroom teacher know. We will be having an information session for anyone interested early next term and will inform you of the specific date first week back.

A reminder also that we have our dress up day on Thursday 27th June. Students are to dress up as a helper in our community.

From the Foundation team, we hope you have a relaxing and safe break and look forward to seeing everyone back after the holidays.
