On Wednesday 22 May, the Year 9 Visual Arts elective group traveled into the city to explore the Nation Gallery of Victoria.

Students walked quietly and respectfully around many levels of the galleries spaces and spend some time sketch an artwork of particular interest to them.

WynSpeak Public Speaking Competition

Congratulations to:

Khushi (9B), Abhishek (9C) and Zade (9E)

Each year, the Rotary Club of Hoppers Crossing, together with the Hoppers Crossing Apex Club, run the Wyndham Youth Public Speaking Competition. Known as Wynspeak, the competition brings together students from over 30 schools from across the western metropolitan region of Melbourne.

On Tuesday 21 May, three students from Tarneit College took to the stage in the fifth heat of the 2019 WynSpeak Competition. Heat 5 was a special round, featuring only Year 7-9 students from local Prep to 9 Colleges. Year 9 students Khushi, Abhishek  and Zade competed against students from Baden Powell P-9, Featherbrook P-9, Point Cook P-9, Truganina P-9 and Caranballac College.

The WynSpeak competition begins with students delivering a prepared, five-minute speech on a topic of their choice. In this section of the competition, Abhishek chose to speak on the issue of peer pressure, encouraging the audience to always be true to themselves in the face of negative peer pressure. Khushi spoke about the climate crisis, concluding with a strong call to action while Zade took the audience back in time, educating us about the history of music and encouraging us to listen widely. Our three representatives worked extremely hard to prepare their speeches in the lead up to the competition. On the night, the hard work paid off, with all three speakers delivering confident, accomplished performances.

The second part of WynSpeak is the ‘short notice’ speech competition. Delivering a short notice speech is even more challenging than giving a prepared speech. In this event, students are given a random topic and have only four minutes to prepare a two-minute speech! Zade discussed the topic ‘something you shouldn’t do if you want to make a good impression’, Abhishek was given the surprising topic of ‘what I think aliens would look like’ while Khushi spoke on ‘what the world needs most’.

Abhishek, Zade and Khushi all performed well under pressure, delivering coherent and engaging speeches. However, the judges felt that Khushi’s speech was the strongest, awarding her the prize for the best short notice speech. Khushi will now be competing in the WynSpeak final. The final will be held at the Thomas Carr College Performing Arts Centre on Wednesday 5 June.

All members of the community are welcome to attend, we’d love to see a big crowd there to support Khushi.

The Victorian State School SPECTACULAR

We are proud and excited to have some of our students participating in the 2019 Victorian State Schools Spectacular: Made of Stars

The Spectacular brings together government school communities from across Victoria. Fittingly, this year’s theme, Made of Stars, will feature a galaxy of out-of-this-world performances showing that these students are made of star stuff.

The three-hour live show – involving music, dance, skateboarding and circus arts – will be performed to an audience of around 12,000 people at Melbourne Arena on Saturday 14 September over two shows at 1pm and 6:30pm.

Talented Victorian students will feature on stage, while many other students will work behind the scenes, gaining unique, on-the-job, professional experience.

The Spectacular is a creative vision of industry professionals including Creative Director Neill Gladwin, Musical Director Chong Lim AM, Dance Director Deon Nuku, (Scooby Doo, Happy Feet, Moulin Rouge) and Associate Dance Director Yvette Lee, (Dancing with the Stars, X-Factor Australia, Australia’s Got Talent and So You Think You Can Dance).
