Hairspray The Musical

From humble beginnings in November of last year, through the long months of March through July to the final hectic weeks of production week, Hairspray the Broadway Musical finally arrived in all its vibrancy and colour!  Picture if you will, hours of dancing and singing, thousands of lines learned to perfection (well some only in the last days), multitudes of musical notes, metres of fabric, hours of set design and manufacture, tubes of lipstick, cans of hairspray, many, many laughs and some tears as well and you will have some idea of the behemoth that is a school musical.

As a production team we had only to look at our young people on or off stage to understand the breadth and depth of their talent, their commitment and their all round “humanity”.  This has been a very new cast overall, some untested on the stage (we will all remember Hayden’s turn with the camera – what a highlight!), but this cast has shown persistence, resilience and mutual respect that is hard to beat.  They have been supportive of the production team, have shown each other care and empathy, and have offered up their own ideas in all areas of vocal, musical, dance and dialogue direction, truly working as a cohesive unit.

“Hairspray” was fun to both prepare and perform and, along with thanking our talented team of students and staff from our school, we acknowledge the unwavering support of the many parents involved in Set Design and Construction and Costuming.
