Dear Parents & Community

I think it's really important to listen to what the students are saying so imagine my surpise when Keira and Eddy from Year 3 came to visit me on the cusp of Book Week with some of their stories they had written. Not that it's unusual for me to receive visitors to show me their work, as this is a frequent occurance. (One of the best things about my work really).

However it was the quality and the number of books they had written which was the surprise. I had to take them all home to read!

It's not rocket science. Reading is important to develop language skills. The more words children know, the better. For children who speak more than one language, reading is an easy way to help their language skills and is important to develop their fluency.

Reading to your child(ren) leads to questions about the book and the information within it. Reading gives you a chance to speak about what is happening and to use this as a learning experience. My daughters' enjoyed being read to well in to Secondary School and I was able to introduce them to literature that they might not have come accross on their own.

It has been a big week for Dads with Father's Day (Significant Male Day) coming up. Thank you to the Parents and Friends Association (PFA) for holding IPS's first Father's Day Stall last Monday and Wednesday's Father's Day Breakfast. Both were terrific successes and relied heavily on the parents who volunteered and the support of the canteen crew.

The Treehouse wins an award

Re: Excellence in Construction Awards – Ivanhoe Primary School Project (‘The Treehouse’) McColl Smith Builders Communication follows.

McColl Smith Projects are thrilled to announce that we were announced the winner of the Excellence in Construction of Commercial Buildings Under $3m by the Master Builders Association of Victoria. The ‘Treehouse’ Project was nominated amongst some of the best construction projects in Victoria over the last 12 months.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the individuals and organisations who played a part in the delivery of this excellent building. Special thanks goes to Mark Kent (Ivanhoe Primary Principal), Bruno Imeneo (VSBA Representative) and each of the architects from Maddison Architects that played a role through project inception to the delivery of the building.

We know that Ivanhoe Primary School will continue to enjoy educating its students within this building for many years to come and it was an honour and pleasure for McColl Smith Projects to build. Please refer to our website for some further images taken of the completed building!

School Disco September 6th 2019

Session 1 - 5.45pm - 7pm: Foundation to Grade 3

Session 2 - 7.15-8.30pm: Grade 3 – Grade 6

*Grade 3 can choose either session (but not both)

The student disco is coming up very soon and the students are getting excited. Permission can be provided by you on COMPASS. This will enable us to print a list of all those in attendance so we can ring a parent in case of an emergency. While the event will appear in your COMPASS please DO NOT tick attend if your child is not going as this will confuse our processes. Once the Disco is over it will be removed from your feed. Alternatively you can download the form below, fill it out and it will be collected from your child at the door.

The main change is parents can once again come into the hall to get kids settled if needed (like in years gone by). We know some of the younger students in particular may want Mum or Dad to take them in to find some friends, and we don’t want the disco to be stressful for anyone. So if that’s your family, come on along and get them settled. The hall does get busy though, so if you can escape after that or just drop kids at the door (after signing them in) please do so, that relieves a lot of pressure on the night. If you want to stay close by we’ll have a classroom open for you with tea and coffee. Please work with us to keep the event focussed on a great night for the kids, keeping parents out of the way where possible.

Although I will be there please remember these events are run by volunteers (not the school). Please do not take photos of other peoples children.

A Bebras Australia Computational Question - Answer next week.

Last year, as part of the Digital Technologies program Year 3-6 students participated in the Bebras Computational Thinking Challenge. Well it is on again. Check how engaged these students are in the work.

Mr O'Callaghan suggested a question a week for those at home. Here is the first one. * Answer next week!

In the game of "Turning Numbers" you can scramble the numbers 1 to 9.

At the start of every game, the numbers are orientated as shown in the picture on the left.

When you push button A, B, C or D, the numbers around make a quarter turn.

For example: when you push button A, the numbers will be placed as shown in the image on the right side.

Bebras is an international student Computational Thinking Challenge and Bebras Australia is run by CSIRO Education and Outreach through the Digital Careers program.

Environmental Leadership :

Nesting Boxes for IPS

On Wednesday, Jim and Paul from Banyule Council came out to IPS to put up a number of nesting boxes in our trees. The nesting boxes come in three different designs and are for mircro bats, lorikeets and possums. Some of these boxes were built by our Environmental Leaders on their excursion to Rosanna Parklands! Hopefully these added habitat values make happy homes for our native wildlife.

Science: Year 5 expo

On Wednesday, the Grade 5 classes held a Science Expo. We welcomed parents, grandparents and other classes to come and visit us.

The Grade 5 students have been learning about Light this term in a Science unit called, "The Might and Sight of Light".

The students were then set a homework project to present information / experiments about reflection, refraction or absorption (or all three!)

If you were able to visit – THANK YOU! Although the students started the day with some nerves, their presentations and experiments were exceptional. All the Grade 5 students should be so proud of what they achieved. Well Done Grade 5s!

Premier's Reading Challenge Closes Next Week

There is not long to go (September 6th) for children to log on and complete their Premier’s Reading Challenge details. If you have misplaced your login details speak to your child's teacher or call Francine in the office.

Working Bee Sunday 8th (9am - 12)

Please come along as there's plenty to do. Mr Bull (Yr 5 teacher) has taken over the coordination of the working bees. We've reduced the number to two per term hoping for a more concentrated turnout. It takes a village.

Finally - A donation of furniture

A huge thank you to the Kerner Family. Jeremy, Jane, Olivia and Phoebe for enabling IPS to take posession of some much needed furniture for a variety of areas across the school from a source where it was no longer required. The donation consisted of tables, chairs, much needed storage, white boards other items that will all be used.

The generousity of the community is always appreciated.

The students in particular will derive a great deal of benefit from the new addition to the Collaboration Space.
