Level 4 (Grades 2-6) News

Incursion time!
On Tuesday we had famous author and illustrator Leigh Hobbs visit to teach the students his creative process. This was a great incursion that the students really enjoyed. Leigh showed the level four group the pilot for his famous kid’s show - Old Tom, and then taught the students how to draw some of his characters and create their own.
Grade 2
Wow - what a huge term of learning in Grade 2! It has been a jam-packed 10 weeks. Students have covered a huge array of academic topics and have progressed well within each subject. It was lovely to meet with each child and their parent(s) on Wednesday and Thursday. These interviews were a wonderful chance to reflect on all the progress each child has shown and open their eyes to how successful they have been, along with looking at areas for development.
Students have also shown enormous development with their interpersonal skills this term. The Grade 2 students have formed very close bonds with their classmates - developing new friendships and deepening existing ones. Students have matured and proven themselves to have strong character, community and learning values. Well done, Grade 2!
Throughout the term, we have been very lucky to welcome lots of new students to our class. These students have settled in very quickly and all children have been very welcoming towards them. It is very exciting to get new classmates! Unfortunately, we are farewelling one of our classmates - Kai, but thankfully only for a term! Kai is heading up to Mt Hotham for Term 3 but will be back in Term 4 (he promises!). Good luck in the snow, Kai!
Finally, I wish everyone a safe and happy holiday break! The kids have shared some of their plans for the break - from OSH Club to playdates at the park, it sounds like they've got two weeks of fun ahead of them. I look forward to seeing everyone at the beginning of Term 3, ready for many more adventures!
Grade 3
Term 2 has now come to an end and everyone in Grade 3 should be super proud of their efforts. I would like to thank all the parents who came and celebrated their child’s end of term progress.
In English and Inquiry, we got the chance to share our endangered animal posters to the Grade 2s. Students got a chance to practice their listening and speaking skills by answering questions and presenting their information to others. It was great fun and their posters look amazing!
In Maths, we concentrated on fractions as a whole, units of fractions and drawing a range of shapes to create equivalent fractions. We will continue to consolidate this area of learning next term. At the end of the week we revised some mental strategies to solve number and even played a fun game called ‘Musical clocks’.
I would like to thank Elijah and Bander for being such wonderful students in Grade 3 and I wish them all the best at their new school. We will all miss you! Have a safe, relaxing and well deserved holiday!
Grade 4/5/6
Wow! Hasn’t this term moved fast.
As a 4/5/6 cohort we have completed so much amazing learning this term.
In Inquiry we have finished a unit on sustainability. We learnt about weather patterns, data collection and different climates around the worlds. Student researched another country to create brochures or plan a travel expo. And lastly, we had a visit from The Eco Centre where Karen taught the boys and girls about proper recycling and leadership skills.
In reading, student have read furiously to complete their reading targets for the term. Following our AR process of reading a text in our ZPD (Zone of proximal development or reading range) and then completing the AR quiz (either in the morning period 8:45-9:00am or lunch eating time) we have had several students reach 100% or more of their target. One student even reached 250% of their target. A big success!
In Maths 4/5/6 have had a successful term of learning. We have focussed on area and perimeter, fractions, decimals and percentages, logic skills and problem-solving skills. This was a highly fruitful term with a lot of successes. Student have shown a huge growth in their number fluency using Maths Invaders and testing displaying growth in their knowledge.
It has been a high successful term for all! We have you to thank. Students, parent and teacher have done a wonderful job. So, as we finish the term congratulate your child. Ask them about their successes and celebrate these together.
There are big plans for next term, and we cannot wait to see all the happy face returning in term 3.
Enjoy your holidays. Mr Callum and Mr Eli will be.
